Corpse Party is a Japanese horror adventure game created by Makoto Kedouin and developed in its modern form by Team GrisGris. Its roots reach back to 1996, when Kedouin made the original CORPSE-PARTY for the NEC PC-9801 using the RPG Tsukūru Dante98 development tool. The later version most international players know began as Corpse Party: BloodCovered, a substantially expanded remake released for Windows in 2008. It was subsequently adapted for PlayStation Portable, iOS, Nintendo 3DS, and other platforms, with XSEED Games publishing the English releases. The 2021 edition further updated the original experience for modern consoles and PC. The story follows students from Kisaragi Academy who remain at school after a cultural festival to say goodbye to their departing friend, Mayu Suzumoto. Their teacher, Yui Shishido, is also present. After performing the “Sachiko Ever After” ritual with a paper charm, the group is transported to Heavenly Host Elementary School, a demolished institution existing in another dimension. The survivors include Satoshi Mochida, Naomi Nakashima, Yoshiki Kishinuma, Ayumi Shinozaki, Seiko Shinohara, and Satoshi’s younger sister Yuka. They soon discover that Heavenly Host was the site of brutal child murders, and the school is haunted by spirits connected to those deaths. Corpse Party does not use conventional combat. Its gameplay combines exploration, item investigation, dialogue choices, and environmental storytelling, resembling a point-and-click adventure fused with a battleless role-playing game. Players search classrooms, infirmaries, bathrooms, and hidden corridors while examining objects that reveal the school’s history. Incorrect actions can trigger “Wrong Ends,” often depicting the characters’ deaths in graphic detail. The game’s multiple endings depend on decisions, item use, and discoveries rather than simple victory conditions. A distinctive feature is its binaural Japanese voice acting, designed to create positional sound through headphones. The original release also uses limited pixel art, portrait illustrations, disturbing sound effects, and sudden shifts between quiet investigation and violent supernatural encounters. This contrast helped establish the game’s identity: Heavenly Host is frightening not because it constantly attacks the player, but because ordinary school spaces become evidence of crimes that remain psychologically active.

Corpse Party’s success led to sequels and related titles, including Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash, and Blood Drive. Book of Shadows explores alternate outcomes and character-focused stories, while Blood Drive continues the Heavenly Host arc and is described as its conclusion. The series also expanded into manga, animation, and additional game releases, making Corpse Party one of the most recognizable Japanese horror franchises to emerge from an independent RPG-making project.
