Cave Story is a 2004 freeware action-adventure game created almost entirely by Japanese developer Daisuke Amaya, who used the pseudonym Pixel. Amaya spent about five years making it, handling programming, art, music, and design. Originally released for Windows in Japan, it became widely known outside the country through fan translations and word of mouth. Its success eventually led to officially licensed ports and expanded editions, including releases for WiiWare, Nintendo DS, 3DS, Switch, PlayStation platforms, and Steam. The game begins when an amnesiac robot later identified as Quote awakens in a cave on an isolated floating island. He encounters the Mimiga, rabbit-like inhabitants targeted by the island’s hostile Doctor. The Doctor seeks to exploit red flowers, which transform Mimiga into violent creatures. Quote searches for Sue Sakamoto, a Mimiga whom the Doctor wants to use in his plans, while also meeting her brother Kazuma, Professor Booster, and the witch Misery. Balrog, Misery’s talkative rectangular companion, serves as a recurring adversary and comic presence. The story moves through locations such as the Egg Corridor, Grasstown, Sand Zone, the Labyrinth, and the abandoned Plantation. Its later revelations connect the island to a previous war and to the Crown, an artifact that amplifies the Doctor’s power. Depending on the player’s choices and performance, Cave Story offers multiple endings. The best-known “good” route requires actions including keeping Curly Brace alive and obtaining the Booster 2.0, then opens access to the Blood-Stained Sanctuary and its final antagonist, Ballos. Cave Story combines run-and-gun combat with exploration and role-playing progression. Quote’s weapons gain experience from defeated enemies, but losing health can reduce their levels. The starting Polar Star can be traded for the Machine Gun, while other weapons include the Missile Launcher, Fireball, Bubbler, Blade, and Spur. Players can also collect health capsules, ammunition expansions, and key items that alter routes through the island. Its compact 16-bit-style presentation and chiptune soundtrack are also Amaya’s work. In 2011, Nicalis released Cave Story+, an enhanced version with remastered graphics, additional modes, and other changes. The original game’s enduring reputation rests on its precise controls, interconnected areas, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly elaborate narrative made by one creator. A separate Nintendo 3DS remake, Cave Story 3D, arrived in 2011. It replaced the original sprites with polygonal models and added a new soundtrack, while retaining Quote’s journey through the floating island and its branching ending requirements for returning players to discover.
