Castlevania, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan on September 26, 1986, is Konami’s side-scrolling action game about vampire hunter Simon Belmont. Its Japanese title was Akumajō Dracula, commonly translated as Demon Castle Dracula. The game established many of the series’ defining elements: a Gothic setting, hostile supernatural creatures, platforming stages, subweapons, and battles against Dracula.

The story begins in Transylvania in 1691, when Dracula’s castle appears once again. Simon Belmont, a member of the Belmont clan, enters the castle to defeat Dracula and end his threat. The game does not present its narrative through extensive dialogue or cinematic scenes. Instead, its plot is communicated through the setting, enemy designs, brief ending text, and the player’s progress through the castle.

Simon’s primary weapon is the Vampire Killer, a whip that can be upgraded twice by collecting power-ups. The first upgrade lengthens the whip, while the second gives it greater strength. Simon can also carry one secondary weapon at a time: the dagger, axe, holy water, boomerang-like cross, or stopwatch. These weapons consume hearts, which are dropped by defeated enemies and function as ammunition rather than health. Candles scattered throughout the stages contain weapons, hearts, money bags, or other useful items.

The original game contains six main blocks, each divided into three sections. Simon confronts creatures including bats, zombies, mermen, medusa heads, fishmen, and the Grim Reaper. Boss encounters conclude the blocks, leading eventually to Dracula. The castle’s architecture and enemy patterns demand careful timing. Simon cannot change direction in midair, and stairs, knockback, limited movement, and recurring enemy formations make positioning especially important.

Castlevania was first released in North America in May 1987 and in Europe in 1988. Its music, written primarily by Kinuyo Yamashita and Satoe Terashima, became particularly notable. Tracks such as “Vampire Killer” and “Wicked Child” helped give the game a memorable identity and became recurring pieces in later Castlevania titles.

The game was later ported to Commodore 64 and DOS, and it appeared in compilations including Castlevania Anniversary Collection. Its immediate follow-up, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, changed the formula with exploration and role-playing features. The first Castlevania remains important because it defined the franchise’s original action-focused structure before later entries expanded the series into interconnected exploration games.
