Call of Duty: Warzone launched on March 10, 2020, as a free-to-play battle royale tied to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Developed principally by Infinity Ward and Raven Software and published by Activision, it arrived for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One with cross-platform play and cross-progression. Its launch accompanied Modern Warfare's Season Two and introduced the fictional city of Verdansk, a large map assembled from locations and assets associated with Modern Warfare's setting. The original battle royale supported up to 150 players (later modes expanded to 200) and set it apart through an in-match currency called Cash. Players could collect it from loot, contracts, and kills, then spend it at Buy Stations on items including loadout drops, killstreaks, armor, and teammate redeployments. Contracts marked optional objectives such as Bounties and Recon tasks. The game also replaced a conventional one-life elimination with the Gulag: after a first death, a player could fight another eliminated competitor in a small prison arena for a chance to return to the match. Warzone initially included Plunder, a mode where squads raced to deposit one million Cash rather than simply outlast every opponent. On December 16, 2020, Warzone integrated with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and added Rebirth Island, a smaller map inspired by the real Alcatraz Island location but presented in the series' fictional style. In April 2021, Verdansk was replaced by Verdansk '84, a 1980s-set version released after an in-game destruction event. The map cycle continued with Caldera, launched in December 2021 alongside Vanguard's seasonal integration. Warzone 2.0, released on November 16, 2022, brought the Al Mazrah map and changed several systems, notably adding AI combatants and Strongholds in its Battle Royale environment. Its DMZ mode used Al Mazrah as an extraction experience in which players completed faction missions, gathered contraband, and attempted to exfiltrate alive. DMZ was launched with Warzone 2.0, but Activision announced in September 2023 that it would not receive future Modern Warfare seasonal updates. In November 2023, Warzone integrated content from Modern Warfare III and returned to a large-scale Urzikstan map. This version introduced movement changes such as slide cancelling and the ability to move while using certain items, while retaining Warzone's familiar loadout economy. The game's long-running seasonal format has linked maps, weapons, operators, and narrative events to successive Call of Duty releases. Its enduring identity nevertheless rests on Verdansk's mix of battle royale, contracts, and Gulag
