Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game developed and published by the Chinese studio Game Science. Released on August 20, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and Windows, it later arrived on Xbox Series X and Series S on August 20, 2025. The game is based on Journey to the West, the sixteenth-century Chinese novel attributed to Wu Cheng’en, but it tells an original story rather than directly retelling the book. Players control the Destined One, a mysterious monkey warrior who follows the legacy of Sun Wukong. The adventure takes place across six major chapters, each drawing on characters, locations, and ideas associated with Journey to the West. Its combat combines staff techniques, dodges, spells, transformations, and spirit skills. The protagonist can use three transformation spells, including abilities connected to particular defeated enemies, while other spells allow immobilization, deception, or temporary invulnerability. The game features numerous bosses, including major figures adapted from Chinese mythology and the source novel. Their encounters are central to progression, and many optional battles reveal additional story details through item descriptions, character biographies, and short animated tales. Instead of presenting its narrative only through dialogue and cutscenes, Black Myth: Wukong uses environmental clues and carefully written descriptions to expand its interpretation of the mythological world. Game Science first attracted international attention in 2020, when it released a lengthy gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Wukong using Unreal Engine 5. The footage displayed detailed environments, cinematic presentation, and a combat system inspired by the studio’s earlier work. Before developing this project, Game Science had created multiplayer titles such as Asura and 100 Heroes, but Black Myth represented a major shift toward a large-scale single-player production. Upon release, the game became one of Steam’s most-played single-player releases, exceeding two million concurrent players on the platform shortly after launch. It also received strong commercial attention in China and internationally. Black Myth: Wukong won Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2024 and received other nominations, including Game of the Year. Its success drew particular notice because it came from a Chinese developer and demonstrated the global market potential of a high-budget Chinese original game. Although its structure and difficulty invite comparisons with modern action games influenced by Dark Souls, Black Myth: Wukong is not a direct Soulslike copy. It emphasizes set-piece boss fights, literary adaptation, visual spectacle, and a focused campaign. Its significance lies in combining Chinese mythology, contemporary performance technology, and a globally accessible interpretation of one of China’s most influential classic novels.
