Battlefield 2142 is a first-person military shooter developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts for Windows in October 2006. Its conflict takes place in the year 2142, during a new Ice Age that has frozen much of Earth and reduced the amount of habitable land. The game’s central war is fought between the European Union, commonly called the EU, and the Pan Asian Coalition, or PAC. Neither faction is presented as simply fighting for political influence: both are struggling to survive as climate conditions make territory and resources increasingly scarce. The game’s most distinctive feature is Titan mode. Each team controls a massive airborne aircraft carrier called a Titan. Teams must first capture missile silos positioned around the map. Controlled silos automatically launch missiles at the opposing Titan, lowering its shields. Once the shields are destroyed, soldiers can board the enemy Titan using transports or assault vehicles. Attackers then fight through its interior, destroy four reactor consoles, and reach the reactor core. The defenders must repel the boarding party or launch from the Titan to retake missile silos. This combination of territorial conquest and close-quarters ship combat gives Battlefield 2142 a structure different from ordinary Conquest matches. The standard Conquest mode remains available, with teams competing for control points and ticket counts. The futuristic setting is reflected in equipment such as the EU’s FAV, the PAC’s similar fast attack vehicle, mechanized walkers, active camouflage, deployable sentry guns, and the Rorsch Mk-S8 railgun. Players select from four battlefield roles: Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon. Each role has unlockable equipment, and the persistent soldier system lets players earn experience and unlock new weapons and gadgets over multiple rounds. DICE later expanded the game with Northern Strike, a booster pack released in 2007. It adds three European maps, including Bridge at Remagen and Port Bavaria, along with new vehicles and the Assault Lines game mode. Assault Lines requires attackers to capture objectives in sequence before assaulting the enemy’s final base, while defenders attempt to halt that advance. Battlefield 2142 is notable within the series because it made futuristic warfare, rather than a historical or contemporary conflict, its defining subject. Its frozen-world premise, Titan battles, walkers, and progression system established a specific identity that distinguished it from Battlefield 2, released the previous year.
