A Little to the Left is an organization-focused puzzle game developed by the Canadian studio Max Inferno and published by Secret Mode. It launched for Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch on November 8, 2022. Versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S followed in 2023. Rather than giving players a conventional narrative campaign, it turns everyday household objects into compact visual puzzles: stationery, books, dishes, tools, pantry items, toiletries, and other possessions must be sorted, stacked, aligned, or fitted into a satisfying arrangement. Its central recurring character is a mischievous house cat. The cat can swipe objects, knock over a carefully completed layout, or otherwise interfere with the player’s tidying. That idea came directly from the developers’ experience: Max Inferno co-founder Annie Macmillan has described the game as being inspired by her own tendency to organize and by a cat that disrupted those efforts. This domestic premise distinguishes the game’s puzzles from abstract block-pushing systems. A solution may depend on color, size, pattern, shadow, label direction, the sequence of printed imagery, or the physical shapes left by objects. Many stages deliberately support more than one answer. The game marks these alternate solutions with stars, encouraging players to reconsider an arrangement instead of treating a single rule as absolute. Its hint system is likewise designed to be optional: hints can reveal a useful placement without automatically completing the whole puzzle. The game also includes the Daily Tidy Delivery, a rotating daily puzzle feature with time-limited access to a fresh organizational challenge. Max Inferno expanded A Little to the Left after release. The Cupboards & Drawers downloadable expansion arrived on June 27, 2023, adding puzzles built around compartments, shelves, drawers, and other storage spaces. A second expansion, Seeing Stars, released on June 25, 2024. It introduced further puzzle sets centered on multiple possible solutions and star-based completion goals, extending an aspect already present in the main game. The title earned prominent recognition in the independent-games space. At the 2023 BAFTA Games Awards, A Little to the Left was nominated for British Game and for the EE Game of the Year public-vote award. Its appeal rests on a very specific tension: the player seeks visual order, but the rules are often inferred from the objects themselves, and the cat remains ready to turn neatness into a new problem. That uncertainty is part of the game’s deliberate, playful, replayable appeal overall.
