1666: Amsterdam is an unreleased historical action game associated with Patrice Désilets, the creative director known for creating the original Assassin’s Creed. The project was developed at THQ Montreal, the studio Désilets joined after leaving Ubisoft. Its title identifies both the intended setting and period: Amsterdam in the year 1666. The game became publicly known during development at THQ Montreal, before the publisher’s bankruptcy. THQ entered bankruptcy proceedings in December 2012, and Ubisoft purchased several of the company’s assets in January 2013, including THQ Montreal. Désilets therefore returned to Ubisoft through the acquisition, but the relationship ended only a few months later. Ubisoft dismissed him in April 2013. Désilets disputed the circumstances of his departure, and the project’s development stopped. Because 1666: Amsterdam was never released, there is no completed campaign, definitive plot, playable protagonist, or verified account of its final mechanics. Public material does establish that it was planned as a large-scale historical game set in Amsterdam, but many descriptions circulating online go beyond what the available evidence confirms. In particular, claims presenting a complete story, extensive character roster, or fully documented gameplay system should be treated cautiously unless they are tied to original developer statements or surviving footage. The historical date gives the project a precise context. Amsterdam in 1666 was part of the Dutch Republic’s prosperous Golden Age, but the city also faced serious disease, inequality, and political tension. The year falls during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, which lasted from 1665 to 1667. These facts describe the historical environment available to the developers, not a confirmed sequence of events in the unreleased game. After leaving Ubisoft, Désilets founded Panache Digital Games in Montreal. A legal dispute concerning his dismissal and the project’s ownership was eventually resolved. In 2016, Désilets announced that Panache had obtained the rights to 1666: Amsterdam, making a future revival legally possible. No released version followed, and Panache instead became known for developing Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, released in 2019. Consequently, 1666: Amsterdam is best documented as a cancelled or indefinitely shelved game rather than as a finished title. Its notable history is its connection to Désilets, THQ Montreal, Ubisoft’s acquisition of that studio, and the later transfer of the project’s rights to Panache. Its setting is specific, but its actual plot and intended career structure remain insufficiently documented to describe as established fact. Any account claiming to explain the complete game must distinguish confirmed development history from speculation, concept material, or interpretation of incomplete footage.
