Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. It launched on March 3, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and was available through Xbox Game Pass at release. Its story recasts the late Later Han dynasty and the opening of the Three Kingdoms era as a supernatural war over an elixir that grants power while turning people into monsters.

The player controls a customizable militia soldier who becomes entangled with a blindfolded boy and the Taoist Yu Ji. Yu Ji pursues the Elixir of Life, whose corrupting effects drive the game’s demon outbreaks and political manipulation. The campaign begins during the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 CE, then encounters historical figures including Zhao Yun, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Cao Cao, Sun Jian, Yuan Shao, Dong Zhuo, and Lü Bu. These people are not presented as documentary portraits: the game transforms their conflicts into battles against demons and warlocks.

Team Ninja built Wo Long around aggressive melee combat, rather than the stance-based systems used in its Nioh games. Every weapon can attack, but the central defensive technique is Deflect, a timed response that avoids an incoming strike and can reverse momentum. Successful deflections reduce an enemy’s Spirit, while excessive attacks or blocks can exhaust the player’s own Spirit. A red Critical Blow is especially dangerous, yet it can be deflected.

The Morale Rank system adds a battle-specific progression layer. Players enter a battlefield at rank zero and raise it by defeating foes; Fortitude limits how far Morale falls after death. Higher Morale improves combat effectiveness, while formidable enemies display their own ranks. Battle Flags act as checkpoints and restore resources, whereas Marking Flags increase Fortitude.

Wizardry Spells are organized around the Five Phases: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each spell has a Morale requirement, so a character’s build and current battlefield status both matter. The game supports cooperative play with up to three players and permits AI allies called Reinforcements in many missions.

Three post-launch expansions extended the narrative in 2023: Battle of Zhongyuan, released June 29; Conqueror of Jiangdong, released September 27; and Upheaval in Jingxiang, released December 12. The Complete Edition, containing the three DLC packs, arrived in February 2024. Wo Long means “Crouching Dragon,” an image associated with hidden potential and fitting its militia hero’s rise amid dynastic collapse.
