The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It launched worldwide on May 12, 2023, as a direct sequel to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Set in the same version of Hyrule, it continues Link’s story while expanding the world above and below the familiar kingdom.

The opening takes place beneath Hyrule Castle, where Link and Princess Zelda investigate a chamber containing murals and the remains of an ancient figure. Their discovery awakens Ganondorf, the Demon King, whose attack severely injures Link and causes Zelda to vanish into the distant past. Hyrule Castle rises into the sky, strange islands appear above the land, and a substance called Gloom spreads through the depths. Link begins his search for Zelda after awakening on the Great Sky Island.

Link’s new abilities are central to the game’s design. Ultrahand allows him to attach objects and construct vehicles, bridges, machines, and other devices. Fuse combines weapons or shields with materials, changing their properties and creating unusual tools. Ascend lets Link pass upward through suitable ceilings, while Recall reverses an object’s movement. These abilities support multiple solutions to exploration, combat, and puzzles rather than prescribing one route.

The game introduces three major vertical layers: the Sky Islands, the surface of Hyrule, and the Depths beneath it. Skyview Towers map sections of the surface, while Lightroots illuminate and heal portions of the Depths. Shrines remain optional puzzle challenges, and Korok seeds again reward exploration. Link also encounters the Zonai, an ancient civilization whose technology and history connect the modern crisis to Hyrule’s past.

Several regional storylines involve phenomena affecting the Zora, Gorons, Rito, and Gerudo. Their leaders cooperate with Link, and each completed regional quest can grant an ally whose ability assists during gameplay. The main mystery concerns Zelda’s fate and the origin of the ancient artifacts called Secret Stones. The story eventually reveals why Zelda’s actions in the past are crucial to opposing Ganondorf in the present.

Tears of the Kingdom received widespread critical acclaim for its physics-based creativity, expansive world, and flexible systems. It won several awards and became one of Nintendo’s fastest-selling games, reaching more than 20 million copies sold worldwide by the end of 2024 according to Nintendo’s published sales reports. Its scale, construction mechanics, and direct narrative continuation distinguish it from its predecessor while preserving the series’ emphasis on exploration and discovery.
