Tekken 8 launched on January 26, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. Published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is the first mainline Tekken game built with Unreal Engine 5. Its story, titled The Dark Awakens, continues the Mishima family conflict after Tekken 7. With Heihachi Mishima presumed dead, Kazuya Mishima uses the resources of G Corporation to pursue global domination. Jin Kazama, Kazuya’s son, tries to stop him while confronting his own Devil Gene. The campaign stages their confrontation against a backdrop of worldwide fighting, with Jin’s mother, Jun Kazama, playing a role in his struggle.

Pivotal story locations include Yakushima, where Jin seeks to recover his strength, and a final confrontation between father and son. The narrative also introduces Reina, a fighter associated with the Mishima Polytechnical School whose connection to Heihachi becomes an important revelation. Reina is one of three newcomers in the launch roster, alongside Peruvian coffee entrepreneur Azucena Ortiz and French intelligence agent Victor Chevalier. The selection contains 32 playable fighters. Jun returns as a playable character after a long absence from the main numbered series, while familiar competitors such as King, Nina Williams, and Marshall Law retain places in the lineup.

Combat centers on the new Heat system, which gives each fighter a temporary offensive state once per round. Players can enter Heat with a Heat Burst or through Heat Engagers, then exploit character-specific moves and a powerful Heat Smash. Attacks can inflict recoverable health even when blocked, encouraging sustained pressure rather than passive defense. Rage Arts remain available when health falls low, and the optional Special Style control scheme puts selected moves and combinations on simplified inputs. Stages feature destructible elements and transitions, including wall and floor breaks, that can extend a juggle or change a round’s positioning.

Outside traditional versus play, Arcade Quest follows a customizable avatar through fictional arcades, introducing mechanics while presenting rival players and tournaments. Super Ghost Battle lets players fight computer-controlled versions of other players whose behavior is learned from match data. The Tekken Fight Lounge provides a shared space where avatars can meet and access matches. Tekken Ball, the beachside mode first introduced in Tekken 3, returns, replacing standard exchanges with attacks aimed at a ball. Postlaunch additions included Eddy Gordo, Lidia Sobieska, and Heihachi Mishima during the first season, expanding a roster whose Mishima family storyline had initially treated Heihachi’s death as settled.
