Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a survival-horror game developed and published by Capcom. It debuted for PlayStation in Japan on September 22, 1999, before releases for Windows, Dreamcast, and GameCube. The game revisits Raccoon City amid the T-virus outbreak, overlapping chronologically with Resident Evil 2. Jill Valentine, a former S.T.A.R.S. officer, becomes its central playable protagonist as she tries to flee the doomed city. Umbrella deploys Nemesis, a Tyrant programmed to eliminate surviving S.T.A.R.S. personnel, making Jill its principal target throughout the campaign. It is not merely a monster encounter; Nemesis can pursue Jill through multiple locations and interrupt her progress.
Director Kazuhiro Aoyama and producer Shinji Mikami were among the key credited creators, while Yasuhisa Kawamura wrote the scenario. At the start, Jill leaves an apartment building and fights through Raccoon City's streets. She joins mercenary Carlos Oliveira and other members of Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, or U.B.C.S. Their route includes the police station, a cable car, a clock tower, a park, and the Dead Factory. Brad Vickers, another S.T.A.R.S. survivor, appears early and can be killed by Nemesis near the police station. The original uses pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles, as its earlier PlayStation series entries did.
Nemesis is distinguished by a black trench coat, exposed teeth, and the ability to wield weapons, including a rocket launcher. His appearances are tied to the game's Live Selection system, which presents timed choices at certain moments. Jill may fight, flee, or choose between routes, and decisions can alter scenes and immediate outcomes. The game also has an epilogue feature: completing it unlocks files describing the later fates of several characters. Its Mercenaries mode, titled The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal, lets players control Carlos, Mikhail Victor, or Nikolai Zinoviev in a timed attempt to reach a goal while earning cash.
The title received a full remake, Resident Evil 3, on April 3, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Developed by Capcom, it uses the RE Engine previously used for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake. The remake presents over-the-shoulder action rather than fixed camera angles and adds a playable opening sequence in which Jill escapes her apartment from Nemesis. It also included the separate online multiplayer component Resident Evil Resistance at launch. Both versions center Jill's escape, Carlos's assistance, and Nemesis's relentless pursuit during Raccoon City's destruction by a U.S. government missile strike.
