Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is a supernatural adventure game developed by Night School Studio and published by Netflix Games. Released on July 12, 2023, it is a sequel to 2016’s Oxenfree, although it introduces a new playable protagonist and a different community. The story takes place in Camena, a coastal Oregon town, five years after the events on Edwards Island. Players control Riley Poverly, a woman who returns to Camena and takes a job investigating unusual radio-frequency interference. Her work brings her into contact with Jacob Summers, a local researcher who becomes her partner in the investigation. Together, they discover that the mysterious organization Parentage is attempting to open portals between dimensions by placing transmitters around the town. The signals are connected to the same dangerous phenomena associated with Edwards Island, including time distortions and the ghostly entities known as the Sunken. The game retains Oxenfree’s distinctive radio as a central tool. Riley can tune frequencies to detect anomalies, communicate across distances, and interact with supernatural events. A walkie-talkie allows her to speak with several characters while exploring, and these conversations can change relationships and later events. As in the original, dialogue choices occur in real time rather than pausing the action, making interruptions, silences, and quick responses part of the narrative system. Riley also carries climbing equipment, allowing her to reach more of Camena’s hills, caves, and abandoned structures. Oxenfree II expands the first game’s time-based storytelling through “time tears,” portals that temporarily connect different moments and places. These sequences reveal information about the Sunken, Parentage, and the history of Maggie Adler, the former military researcher whose recordings shaped the original game’s mystery. Decisions made during Riley’s investigation affect the fates of multiple characters and contribute to several possible endings. Night School Studio used hand-painted 2D character animation over three-dimensional environments, preserving the series’ illustrated visual style while giving Camena a broader physical setting than Edwards Island. The soundtrack again comes from scntfc, whose electronic score and radio textures reinforce the game’s coastal, analog atmosphere. Netflix released the game for mobile devices through its subscription service, while console and computer versions appeared on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. Rather than retelling Alex’s story, Lost Signals builds on the original’s mythology through Riley’s return, Parentage’s dangerous experiment, and Camena’s connection to the unexplained forces beyond ordinary time.
