Monster Hunter is a Capcom action RPG series that began with the PlayStation 2-era release Monster Hunter in Japan in 2004. Its central idea is preparation: hunters accept quests from village or city guilds, track enormous creatures, learn their attack patterns, and carve materials from defeated monsters to forge stronger weapons and armor. The loop is deliberately demanding because equipment determines abilities, while knowledge of terrain, timing, and monster behavior matters as much as reflexes. Unlike many role-playing games, Monster Hunter traditionally has no conventional experience-level system; progression comes primarily through crafted gear and the player's growing expertise itself.
The original game introduced several signature weapon classes, including the Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Long Sword, Lance, and Hammer. Later entries added the Hunting Horn, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, and ranged Bowguns. Each weapon changes movement and combat rhythm, so a hunt against the same target can feel entirely different. Multiplayer cooperation is a defining feature: teams can divide roles, share openings, place traps, and use status effects or environmental hazards. The series also became known for huge monsters such as Rathalos, Rathian, Diablos, and the elder dragon Fatalis alongside countless other creatures worldwide.
Monster Hunter: World, released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and later PC, significantly expanded the series' international audience. It introduced seamless maps instead of separate loading zones during hunts, scout flies that helped track targets, and a research commission operating from Astera. The story follows the commission's investigation of the Elder Crossing, a migration of elder dragons toward the New World. Players eventually confront Zorah Magdaros and pursue Nergigante before reaching the game's final Elder Dragon encounter. Iceborne expansion followed in 2019, adding Hoarfrost Reach and the monster Velkhana. Iceborne added Master Rank, new subspecies, and challenges.
Monster Hunter Rise launched on Nintendo Switch in 2021, then arrived on PC and other platforms. It centers on Kamura Village, whose residents prepare for the recurring Rampage, a monster assault tied to the game's story. Wirebugs add rapid aerial movement, while the Palamute canine companion can carry hunters quickly across the map. Rise's Sunbreak expansion introduced Master Rank, Elgado Outpost, and the Three Lords: Malzeno, Lunagaron, and Garangolm. Monster Hunter Stories, meanwhile, is a separate turn-based role-playing spin-off, while Monster Hunter Wilds presents new environments and systems for the franchise's next major release according to official announcements from Capcom.
