Mewgenics is a turn-based tactical role-playing game from Team Meat, built around an idea that has followed Edmund McMillen for more than a decade: breeding cats whose inherited traits shape their usefulness in dangerous expeditions and their descendants' future capabilities. McMillen initially announced Mewgenics in 2012, after the release of Super Meat Boy, with Tommy Refenes attached to the early project. That first public version was described as a cat-breeding game, deliberately unlike Team Meat's established platforming reputation at all. The project did not follow a simple release path. In 2016 McMillen said it had been cancelled, explaining that he and Refenes had not found a design they both wanted to make. The name nevertheless continued to surface publicly afterwards. While working on other games, including The Binding of Isaac and The Legend of Bum-bo, McMillen repeatedly treated Mewgenics as unfinished business. In 2020, he announced that development had restarted, this time with programmer and designer Tyler Glaiel as collaborator. The revived game changed substantially from the premise people remembered. Official descriptions emphasize squad-based, turn-based battles and roguelike structure alongside breeding, so cats are not merely collectibles but the source of a continuously changing roster for each new campaign. Players send parties into randomly structured runs, then bring survivors and their bloodlines back into a larger breeding system. That combination makes failure and success carry forward: an individual cat's abilities matter, but so do the traits passed onward later. McMillen has framed the project through deliberately excessive scope, an attitude familiar from his prior work, but Mewgenics has a specific lineage beyond that style. Its central fantasy is managing heredity, party composition, and consequences across generations of mutant cats. That distinguishes it from a monster-collection game. The cats are bred rather than captured, and the tactical layer is tied to breeding results. Mewgenics therefore reconnects a long-delayed Team Meat concept with McMillen's interest in systems that produce bizarre stories. Its development history is unusually public. Fans saw an announcement, a cancellation, and then a reappearance with a different collaborator and genre emphasis. That sequence gives the game an identity shaped as much by reinvention as by its original hook. Mewgenics is thus not simply a new title using a fashionable roguelike label. It is the eventual form of a 2012 Team Meat announcement, rebuilt around tactical combat, inherited cat genetics, and an unusually long record of false starts publicly.
