Gourdlets

Gourdlets is a cozy city-building sandbox where players place buildings, scenery, and infrastructure to make towns for vegetable residents freely without objectives.

Gourdlets is a cozy, miniature city-building sandbox developed by AuntyGames and published by Future Friends Games. It launched on Steam for Windows on August 15, 2024. The game asks players to make a town for gourdlets, its small anthropomorphic gourd residents, rather than to complete a conventional campaign. Its official Steam presentation emphasizes that there are no objectives and no points; the appeal is planning a place and observing the inhabitants within it. Building and decorating are the central actions. Players can place buildings, scenery, roads, and railways to determine both the town’s appearance and how its spaces connect. Railroad pieces are especially important to the game’s identity: a settlement can include tracks and stations, and gourdlets arrive and travel by train. The player is therefore not merely arranging isolated houses; transport infrastructure can become part of the visual design and the residents’ activity. Gourdlets does not treat residents as a workforce to be optimized for profits or production. It instead makes their presence a payoff for construction: players can watch gourdlets inhabit the streets and rail network they have assembled. That focus separates the game from management builders built around budgets, resource chains, or victory conditions. Its low-pressure structure is deliberate, not simply an absence of content; official materials describe it as a “cozy little city-building sandbox.” Visual customization is not presented as a secondary reward unlocked after economic progress. It is the format of play from the outset. A player can use the available pieces to make residential rows, station areas, parks, or densely layered streets, then leave the scene running to see gourdlets use it. Because the inhabitants are the town’s named subject, their wandering is part of the intended result, not a background statistic. That design also explains the importance of the railroad. In many city builders, rail is a means of moving cargo or meeting a production target. In Gourdlets, rails are explicitly a construction and decorative element, while trains supply a visible route for residents. Tracks can consequently frame blocks, lead into stations, or define the edge of a small town. The resulting emphasis is on a lived-in diorama: placing an object changes the composition, and watching gourdlets afterward shows the settlement in motion. Gourdlets’ identity is thus tied to its deliberately objective-free approach, its gourd-shaped population, and its unusual decision to put railways alongside buildings and scenery as core town-making tools. This defines Gourdlets.
