Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is a 2010 role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It uses the same Gamebryo-based technology as Fallout 3, but presents a new story in the Mojave Wasteland during 2281, roughly four years after the events of Fallout 3. The player controls the Courier, who survives an attempted murder after delivering a mysterious platinum chip to the New Vegas Strip.

The Courier’s investigation leads through settlements such as Goodsprings and Primm before reaching the Strip, a fortified gambling district controlled by the enigmatic Mr. House. House operates the Lucky 38 casino and commands an army of securitrons, while the New California Republic occupies territory west of the Colorado River. The Caesar’s Legion, led by Caesar, advances from the east. Their conflict centers on Hoover Dam, whose hydroelectric power and strategic position make it the decisive objective of the Second Battle of Hoover Dam.

The platinum chip is connected to Mr. House’s plans to upgrade the securitrons guarding New Vegas. Depending on the player’s choices, the Courier can support House, assist the NCR, join Caesar’s Legion, or pursue an independent route. The independent ending allows the Courier to use the upgraded securitrons while removing the major factions’ control over the region. These choices affect companions, settlements, faction reputations, and the final battle.

New Vegas is notable for its faction-based quest design and multiple political outcomes. The player can recruit companions including Boone, a former NCR sniper; Veronica Santangelo, a Brotherhood of Steel scribe; Arcade Gannon, an Enclave-descended doctor; and ED-E, an eyebot carrying encrypted military data. The game also features the Brotherhood of Steel chapter hidden at Hidden Valley and the isolated Boomers at Nellis Air Force Base.

Its downloadable expansions include Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road. Together, they expand the Courier’s history and connect characters and locations across the Mojave. Lonesome Road introduces Ulysses, a former courier who challenges the player at the Divide. Old World Blues takes place in the Big MT research facility and uses deliberately absurd science-fiction humor.

Although released with technical problems, Fallout: New Vegas became especially respected for its writing, reactivity, dark humor, and willingness to let players shape the Mojave’s political future. Its reputation rests less on a single heroic storyline than on competing ideologies, difficult compromises, and consequences that remain visible through the ending slides.
