Crazy Taxi is a 1999 arcade driving game developed by Hitmaker, a Sega subsidiary, and published by Sega. It places the player behind the wheel of a taxi in a brightly colored coastal city inspired by San Francisco. The objective is simple but demanding: pick up passengers, reach their requested destinations as quickly as possible, and earn fares before the countdown expires. Passengers identify destinations with colored markers, while traffic, hills, intersections, and jumps turn the route into a continuous improvisation challenge.

The original arcade game features four selectable drivers: Axel, B.D. Joe, Gena, and Gus. Each has a distinctive taxi, but their handling differences are more important than their appearances. Players can choose from Arcade mode, which uses a compact version of the city, or Original mode, which offers a larger environment. Standard play is governed by a timer, although successful deliveries award additional seconds. Driving aggressively can also increase earnings: near misses, directional drifts, jumps, and rapid route changes contribute to bonus techniques and higher fares.

Crazy Taxi became particularly recognizable through its licensed soundtrack, which included songs by The Offspring and Bad Religion. Their punk tracks complemented the game's frantic pace and helped establish its identity in arcades. The game also used real brand names in its city, including Pizza Hut, KFC, FILA, and Levi's, giving the fictional streets a commercial landscape that reflected late-1990s urban culture. These brands were later removed or replaced in some ports and re-releases because of licensing differences.

Sega released Crazy Taxi for the Dreamcast in 2000. This version added home-console content, including Crazy Box, a collection of driving challenges that test skills such as jumping, reversing, and delivering multiple passengers. It also included expanded courses and replay value beyond the arcade's timed sessions. The Dreamcast edition was later ported to PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Windows, although music and advertising content varied between versions.

The game's success produced sequels and related releases. Crazy Taxi 2 appeared for Dreamcast in 2001, moving the action to New York-inspired environments and introducing passenger combinations. Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller followed for Xbox in 2002, combining redesigned areas with locations based on earlier games. A mobile adaptation, Crazy Taxi: City Rush, was released in 2014. The original remains notable for turning ordinary taxi work into an arcade spectacle built around speed, route knowledge, and controlled recklessness.
