*Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3* is an expanded version of Capcom’s 2011 fighting game *Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds*. Developed by Capcom and Eighting, it arrived on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2011, less than a year after the original game. A PlayStation Vita version followed, while later releases brought the game to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.
Its defining attraction is a roster that puts Marvel comic-book characters against figures from Capcom games. *Ultimate* added twelve playable fighters to the original lineup. Marvel’s additions were Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Iron Fist, Nova, and Rocket Raccoon. Capcom’s were Firebrand, Frank West, Nemesis, Phoenix Wright, Strider Hiryu, and Vergil. The choices extended well beyond conventional superheroes and martial artists: Phoenix Wright, the courtroom lawyer from *Ace Attorney*, can investigate for evidence during a fight, while *Dead Rising* protagonist Frank West uses his camera as part of his moveset.
Matches use teams of three. Players control one fighter at a time, call teammates for assists, and can switch characters during play. The game retains the series’ fast aerial combos and screen-filling special attacks, but *Ultimate* also revised the original release’s balance and systems. Notably, players can activate the temporary X-Factor power-up while airborne, opening options unavailable in *Fate of Two Worlds*. The expanded edition also added a spectator mode for online matches, addressing an omission from the earlier release.
In Arcade mode, teams fight toward Galactus, the planet-devouring Marvel villain who serves as the final boss. Outside that mode, *Ultimate* received *Heroes and Heralds*, a free downloadable mode in which players choose a side and equip collectible cards that grant special abilities. Those cards can change how a team plays, giving the mode a different emphasis from standard competitive matches.
The game’s release history reflects its lasting audience. After Marvel-related licensing issues led to its removal from digital storefronts in 2013, *Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3* returned on newer platforms beginning with PlayStation 4 in 2016. It also remained prominent in fighting-game competition: it appeared at the Evolution Championship Series throughout much of the 2010s and returned to the event’s main tournament lineup in 2023. For many players, its identity rests on the particular spectacle of its matchups—such as Doctor Strange or Rocket Raccoon sharing a team with Phoenix Wright—and on a tag-team system that rewards elaborate, character-specific combinations.
