Released in 2013, *Remember Me* is an action-adventure game developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Capcom for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows. Its story takes place in Neo-Paris in 2084, where a technology called Sensen allows people to record, share, and alter memories. The company behind it, Memorize, has made personal recollections into a product—and gained enormous influence over how people understand their own lives.

The player controls Nilin, a former “memory hunter” whose memories have been erased. At the start of the game, she is imprisoned in the Bastille. A mysterious contact named Edge helps her escape and directs her toward the Errorists, a group resisting Memorize. Nilin’s search for her identity is inseparable from that conflict: recovering what was taken from her also means confronting the people who built the system.

The game’s most distinctive sequences are its Memory Remixes. Nilin enters another person’s recollection and changes small details within it, then watches the scene play out with a different result. These episodes are not simply puzzles about finding the right object. They ask how a person’s beliefs and decisions can be redirected by changing what they think happened. Elsewhere, Nilin uses “remembranes,” projections of recorded events, to follow earlier actions through the city and solve environmental obstacles.

Combat has a separate customization system called the Combo Lab. Rather than acquiring only fixed attack strings, players place moves called Pressens into combos. Different Pressens deal damage, restore health, reduce the cooldown of special abilities, or amplify other moves. This makes the order of attacks matter, especially when Nilin needs to recover during a fight. She also faces enemies known as Leapers, whose condition reflects the damage associated with the game’s memory technology.

Neo-Paris gives those ideas a physical setting. Familiar Parisian landmarks appear among dense streets, surveillance systems, corporate spaces, and poorer districts. The contrast between those places reinforces the divide between people who control memory technology and people who live with its consequences. Olivier Deriviere composed the score, which combines orchestral music with electronic distortion suited to the game’s fractured recollections.

*Remember Me* was Dontnod’s first released game. Its title points to Nilin’s immediate need to recover her past, but it also describes the larger struggle at its center: whether memories remain a person’s own when someone else can edit, sell, or erase them.
