Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World opens in Astera, a New World base established by the Research Commission after fleets cross the ocean. The player joins the Fifth Fleet, whose arrival follows four earlier expeditions sent to investigate Elder Dragons reaching this continent.

The central mystery concerns the Elder Crossing, a sixty year cycle in which Elder Dragons travel toward the New World. Commander teams the hunter with handler, researchers, and field teams to study ecosystems while locating the ancient dragon Zorah Magdaros.

Zorah's volcanic migration threatens Astera, and its investigation eventually reveals connections involving the mysterious black dragon Xeno'jiiva beneath the continent. Gameplay centers on hunting large monsters, gathering materials, crafting equipment, and exploiting weaknesses rather than following a conventional leveling system.

Every hunt begins from a camp, where supplies, equipment loadouts, meals, and fast travel destinations can be prepared before departure. The New World includes Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste, Coral Highlands, Rotten Vale, Elder's Recess, and the later Hoarfrost Reach region.

Monster behavior changes with territory and ecology: Rathalos guards forests, Diablos burrows underground, while Legiana dominates cliffs in Hoarfrost Reach. The scout flies track footprints and other signs, gradually revealing monster locations and research information across each expedition or investigation.

Investigations offer optional objectives, time limits, faint restrictions, and reward boxes, making them a major route for earning equipment materials. The game launched worldwide for PlayStation Four and Xbox One in January 2018, followed by a Windows release in August.

Capcom later released Iceborne, a substantial expansion adding Hoarfrost Reach, the Seliana hub, new monsters, and Master Rank progression systems. Iceborne's story follows the Commission's response to Legiana migrations and investigates why creatures are moving toward the far frozen region.

Its new flagship monster, Velkhana, is an Elder Dragon whose icy powers reshape the expansion's hunts and final narrative climax. The original endgame features tempered monsters, which possess heightened threat and reward hunters with investigations for augmented equipment and decorations.

Players can wield fourteen weapon types, including Great Sword, insect glaive, hunting horn, switch axe, and charge blade, among others. The Palico companion assists during hunts, using gadgets and equipment that can distract monsters, heal hunters, or gather materials nearby.

Multiplayer supports up to four hunters, with roles emerging through equipment choices, status effects, traps, environmental hazards, and coordinated attacks. Rather than a quest hero, the player creates a hunter whose appearance, weapons, armor, and investigations define a personal campaign.
