Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a mobile role-playing game developed by Alim and published by Square Enix. It launched in Japan in 2015, followed by a global English-language release in 2016. Rather than adapting the story of an earlier Final Fantasy title, it introduced the world of Lapis and its own central cast. Its opening follows Rain and Lasswell, two knights of Grandshelt, who encounter a mysterious woman named Fina. Their journey begins as powerful figures called the Veritas threaten the crystals that protect their world.
The game presents its story through chapters of dialogue, battles, towns, and explorable areas. Its first season centers on Lapis; the second takes Rain, Lasswell, and their allies to Paladia, a world closely tied to the Veritas. Fina moves to the forefront of the third season. These continuing storylines distinguished Brave Exvius from mobile games built solely around collecting familiar characters, although collecting units remained central to how it played.
Combat uses turn-based parties assembled from units obtained through the story, events, and a summon system. Players select abilities for their units, then time attacks to create “chains” that increase damage. They can also use Limit Bursts and summon Espers, including recognizable Final Fantasy creatures such as Ifrit and Shiva. Beyond the main chapters, Brave Exvius offered raids, arena matches, and difficult trial battles. Long-term progression involved equipment, abilities, and rewards called Trust Masteries. Later updates added higher unit rarities and Neo Vision units, some of which could change form through a feature called Brave Shift.
Brave Exvius also drew heavily on the wider Final Fantasy series. Summonable units included characters from numbered games, letting players put heroes from otherwise separate stories into the same party. Limited-time collaborations extended beyond the franchise: events featured properties such as NieR:Automata and Kingdom Hearts, while promotional collaborations introduced playable versions of Ariana Grande and Katy Perry. Those crossovers appeared alongside the original cast rather than replacing its ongoing narrative.
The game’s pixel-art battle sprites gave both original characters and visiting Final Fantasy heroes a shared visual style, while elaborate attack animations supplied much of the spectacle. As a live-service release, it accumulated years of chapters, events, and mechanical changes after its initial launch. The global version ended service on October 30, 2024. That closure marked the end of access to its global servers, but its lengthy run left a distinctive entry in Final Fantasy’s mobile history: one with an original, multi-season story as well as an unusually broad roster of guest characters.
