Alien: Isolation was developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega, launching in October 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The studio, previously known primarily for the Total War strategy series, built a first-person survival horror game rather than a conventional action shooter. Its setting and visual design deliberately follow Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien, including industrial corridors, analog interfaces, CRT displays, and equipment that looks contemporary with the original movie and its technology.

The protagonist is Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, who works as an engineer for the Weyland-Yutani corporation. Fifteen years after the events of Alien, Amanda joins a team sent to investigate the disappearance of the commercial towing vessel USCSS Nostromo. The mission leads to Sevastopol, a large, privately operated space station that has fallen into disorder. There she discovers that Nostromo’s flight recorder is central to the station’s crisis and to the company’s interest in recovering its valuable data.

Unlike many games based on the Alien license, Isolation makes the creature a persistent, largely unscripted threat. Amanda cannot kill it with ordinary weapons; survival depends on hiding, distraction, careful movement, and limited tools. The Alien searches rooms, reacts to noise, and can investigate places where Amanda has taken refuge. A motion tracker offers warnings but also creates tension, because its beeps do not guarantee safety and can attract attention when used carelessly in a confined, unpredictable environment at all.

Sevastopol’s human inhabitants create a second conflict. Amanda encounters survivors, hostile scavengers, security personnel, Working Joes manufactured by Seegson, and androids whose behavior becomes increasingly dangerous. The station’s failing infrastructure forces her to restore power, bypass doors, craft items, and navigate lifts and transit systems. These tasks connect exploration with risk: saving progress at an emergency telephone requires time and proximity to a potentially approaching enemy. That design makes routine actions part of the horror rather than pauses between encounters.

The campaign also includes survivors’ stories through logs, audio recordings, and optional exploration. Two downloadable expansions, Crew Expendable and Last Survivor, revisit moments connected directly to the first film: the former allows players to control members of the Nostromo crew, while the latter centers on Ripley’s attempt to escape after the ship’s destruction. Both expansions use the original film cast’s likenesses and voices for selected characters. They were included in later editions and sold separately on several platforms as expansions.

Isolation received praise for atmosphere, sound design, art direction, and its Alien portrayal, although some reviewers criticized its length and repetition. It won awards including Best Audio at the 2015 British Academy Games Awards. Creative Assembly later released patches and versions for additional hardware, and Feral Interactive produced macOS and Linux editions. In 2019, the game was adapted into a mobile version for iOS and Android, retaining its campaign and first-person structure with controls redesigned for touch-screen play on phones.
