Nightdive discovered a very outdated version of Thief: The Dark Project’s source-control repository while working on a remaster of Looking Glass Studios’ stealth classic.

The discovery helps explain some of the Dark Engine’s peculiarities—the technology that powered the game. According to Nightdive software engineer Josh Dowell, the project’s original team eventually moved on to other work, and a new group took over for the second half of development.

Thief was still known as The Dark Project when it appeared at E3 1997, with a release planned for that year. The game was delayed until 1998, and comments found in the code indicate that development remained a frantic rush right up to its arrival in stores.

Dowell said his favorite part of investigating the Dark Engine codebase was finding messages left by programmers from Looking Glass and Irrational Games. Among them were blunt warnings about temporary solutions, including references to a “giant hack,” as well as requests not to repeat certain sections.

Some comments required changes to be made before 1998 or deleted after E3. Even so, some of this material remained in Thief 2.

Despite the troubled development process revealed by the files, the Dark Engine supported audio, artificial intelligence and lighting features that were cutting-edge for their time. These elements continue to draw attention in Nightdive’s work to preserve and update Thief.
