Sonic Team is already working on the next major Sonic game. Takashi Iizuka, the team’s head, confirmed the news during the Tokyo Game Show, but the studio has yet to reveal the platforms, release window or any specific details about the project.In an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Iizuka said the team aims to create a completely new gameplay experience. The concept involves multiple areas of development, including the characters, story and game systems."We will create a completely new type of gameplay experience through various approaches, from the characters and story to the game systems," Iizuka said. "Stay tuned and look forward to it."The series’ evolution had already been explored in Sonic Colors, which the executive cited as an example during his comments. The Color Powers changed the way the game was played by giving the character specific abilities, and Iizuka believes there is still room to further develop the systemic evolution introduced in Sonic Frontiers, the franchise’s latest 3D release.The announcement comes as Sega prepares the character’s next steps. A new live-action Sonic film is on the horizon, and the company has also confirmed that more games in the series will be produced. The next project, however, remains unnamed and details about its direction are still unknown.To celebrate the character’s 35th anniversary, Sega released Sonic Frontiers on Switch 2. The version reflects the franchise’s current moment as Sonic Team begins to shape the blue hedgehog’s next adventure.
