7 New RPGs to keep an eye on 2024 & 2025!

The RPG industry is gearing up for late 2024 and early 2025 with a diverse slate of highly anticipated releases. From fantasy epics to lighter adventures, the new titles promise to offer something for every type of player.

Highlights include Metaphor: ReFantazio, from the creators of the Persona series, which presents Atlus' ambitious proposal to create a game set in a medieval fantasy universe. Mario & Luigi: Brothership returns with the plumber brothers on an adventure across the seas, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard continues BioWare's famous saga, further expanding the rich world of Thedas with a mature and complex narrative, focusing on political and personal consequences, with a more refined combat system and even broader customization options.

With such a promising lineup, 2024 (which has already featured major titles such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, Dragon's Dogma 2 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth) and 2025 are set to be remarkable years for RPG fans. From the creators of Persona, Metaphor: ReFantazio is Atlus's flagship RPG of 2024 and is set to release in October. The game is set in the kingdom of Euchronia, a fantasy world where the assassination of the king sets off a series of events that plunge the kingdom into chaos.

Players take on the role of a young protagonist who seeks a cure for the curse afflicting the prince of Euchronia. Throughout his journey, he receives help from various characters, such as the fairy Gallica. The game offers a semi-open world with an Archetype system to customize the party and allows to deepen your relationship with other characters, in a style reminiscent of the Persona series' Social Links.

The artistic direction maintains the standard of Atlus titles, with stylized menus and scenarios that ensure a clear and functional visual presentation, without compromising simplicity. BioWare's award-winning franchise returns with its fourth game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which follows the event post the Trespasser expansion from Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game takes place ten years after the events of its predecessor, introducing a new chapter in Thedas's history.

Veilguard maintains the strong character customization and world-shaping decisions that have made the series popular among RPG fans. Early gameplay demos show an improved combat system, including real-time dual-weapon switching and new customization options for the main classes.

The famous plumbers duo return in a new RPG adventure in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. This time, Mario and Luigi set off on a seafaring journey to Shipshape Island, an island shaped like a ship. The duo is transported to the parallel world of Concordia through a mysterious portal and must explore the place to find a way back.

This is the first game in the series since 2015, marking the brothers' return to turn-based RPGs and bringing back the franchise's classic mechanics, with some innovations. Although the premise may not appeal to the most demanding fans of the genre, the game stands out as a great gateway for new players and for those looking for a lighter and more accessible experience with their families, especially their children since it is aimed at younger audiences.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 puts players in the role of Henry, a blacksmith seeking revenge amidst a civil war in the early 15th century. During his journey, he becomes one of the king's allies and accompanies Sir Hans Capon on a crucial diplomatic mission.

The first game was praised for its realism and attention to detail, and the sequel promises to expand even further on these aspects, introducing more dynamic political and social systems. The focus on historical realism and narrative immersion makes Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 one of the most anticipated RPGs for players who value authenticity and depth in an RPG.

From the same studio responsible for The Outer Worlds, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG, with battles based on the use of swords and magic through mystical runes. The game is set in Eora, the world already known to fans of Pillars of Eternity, another Obsidian title.

In the plot, the protagonist is sent by the Emperor to investigate a mysterious plague. To unravel the secrets of the Living Lands, he must gain the trust of the local population. Freedom of choice is central to Avowed, influencing both exploration and narrative, allowing players to shape the fate of the kingdom based on their decisions.

Inspired by franchises such as Final Fantasy and Persona, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG set in the French belle époque. This is Sandfall Interactive's first game, developed with Unreal Engine 5.

Clair Obscur combines turn-based combat with real-time elements, such as quick time events, to bring more dynamism to battles and revitalize a style currently less explored by AAA studios. The story follows the protagonists, Gustave and Lune, on their quest to stop the Paintress, a deity who can erase people by painting numbers in the sky.

With stunning visuals and a combat system inspired by great titles of the genre, the game has become one of the most anticipated of 2025, raising expectations around Sandfall Interactive.

The next game in the Monster Hunter franchise will take players to the Forbidden Lands, a hostile region where monsters' behavior is influenced by the ecosystem and changes in climate and environment caused by both nature and the player's interaction with the world - monsters travel in packs, hunt others, and can prey on unprepared hunters!

In addition to graphics on par with the current generation, Wilds brings some improvements when compared to Monster Hunter: World - despite retaining the same types of weapons, new skills and attacks have been implemented, such as a “focus” mode that allows striking specific parts of the body to cause more damage or exploit a previously caused wound.
