Bungie has delayed Marathon’s next major update, which was set to include the long-awaited permanent PvE mode. The content planned for September 22 will now launch as part of the Symbiosis update on December 8.The December update will also add a new Runner shell, a social space where players can test weapons with others, improvements to the onboarding experience for newcomers, and a revamped version of the Perimeter zone. The package will also include an experimental team deathmatch mode.Instead of the larger update planned for September, Marathon will receive a smaller patch on October 6. The update will reset the game’s progression and economy, while also adding a new Rewards Pass and quality-of-life improvements. Vault Breaker, the PvE mode that appeared temporarily a few months ago, will also return for a limited time. The change goes beyond the delay. Bungie said it is abandoning the season format and moving away from a rigid seasonal calendar. Future updates will no longer follow fixed deadlines, giving the team more flexibility to create, test, and refine features before release. The decision comes in response to community feedback since Marathon’s debut. According to Bungie, players have asked for more depth, variety, consistent progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. The studio said it agrees with that assessment and will need to change both what it is developing and how it delivers content. The delay comes as Marathon struggles to retain existing players and attract new ones following its launch earlier this year. Bungie has also gone through mass layoffs, with at least 290 jobs cut. The Symbiosis update is now scheduled for December 8, while the next content drop arrives on October 6 with the progression and economy reset.
