Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a new upscaling model designed to run on the standard PS5. The technology brings image reconstruction to the console with greater precision, while using a lighter solution than the PS5 Pro-exclusive PSSR.PSSR debuted on the PS5 Pro, but the standard PS5 was left out because of its less powerful GPU. According to Sony, QSSR grew out of the Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD and aims to surpass the quality of the traditional temporal upscaling used on the console. Its first applications will be in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Patches for both games will go live later, with the developers highlighting sharper environments, characters and fine image details.Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac’s chief technology officer, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to the environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. He cited the busy streets of Madripoor, the alleys of Shinjuku and other areas of Logan’s journey as examples of locations that benefit from the technology. At Sucker Punch, lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry said the feature handles small details in the characters and environments of Ghost of Yōtei more effectively, with temporal stability that had not previously been available on PS5.Sony also published comparisons between QSSR and the PS5’s standard temporal upscaling. In Wolverine, the demonstration zooms in on distant buildings. The QSSR image remains blurry, but preserves more detail in fine objects. In Ghost of Yōtei, meanwhile, the grass retains its shape better and suffers less from jagged edges, although it still shows some noise.QSSR is not expected to match the quality of PSSR on PS5 Pro, but Sony said it will make the model available to all developers. The PS5 Pro currently costs US$ 900, making the lighter alternative relevant for those using the standard console.
