Stardew Valley is a farming simulation role-playing game created almost entirely by Eric Barone, who developed it under the name ConcernedApe. It was released for Microsoft Windows in February 2016 after a lengthy solo development period. Barone wrote the code, composed the music, created the pixel art, and designed the game’s systems. The project began partly as a way for him to practice programming while drawing inspiration from the Harvest Moon series, but it developed into a distinct game with its own setting, characters, and long-term narrative. The player character inherits a neglected farm in Stardew Valley from their grandfather and leaves an exhausting office job at Joja Corporation. On arrival, the farm is overgrown with weeds, stones, branches, and trees. Players can clear the land, plant seasonal crops, raise animals, fish, mine, forage, craft equipment, and build relationships with villagers. The calendar contains four seasons, each lasting twenty-eight days. Crops grow only during appropriate seasons, while festivals, birthdays, weather, and village events structure daily life. A central conflict concerns the Community Center, an abandoned building whose restoration is organized through bundles of collected items. Completing the bundles can repair important parts of the valley, including the greenhouse, bus, mine carts, and bridge. Alternatively, the player can purchase development packages from Joja Corporation, transforming the Community Center into a warehouse. These routes represent different outcomes for the town and give the game a concrete economic and social tension rather than treating farming as an isolated activity. Stardew Valley includes twelve possible marriage candidates, each with personal histories and friendship events. The player may also develop relationships with other villagers, including the fisherman Willy, blacksmith Clint, scientist Demetrius, and wizard Rasmodius. The mines beneath the mountains contain monsters, ore, geodes, and a deeper challenge in Skull Cavern, which becomes accessible through the repaired bus. Later updates added substantial features, including multiplayer, the island region of Ginger Island, new quests, characters, items, and endgame objectives. The game became notable for its sustained post-release development and its unusually broad authorship. Barone continued producing major updates for years, expanding a project originally made by one person. Stardew Valley’s success also led to ports for consoles and mobile devices, a physical board game adaptation, and a dedicated fan community. Despite its simple premise, its specific world, seasonal structure, authored music, and interlocking systems make the inherited farm a setting with a recognizable history and a continuing sense of place.
