The Last of Us Part I is Naughty Dog’s ground-up remake of the 2013 PlayStation 3 game, released for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and for PC on March 28, 2023. It preserves the original single-player campaign while rebuilding its environments, character models, lighting, animation, and combat presentation with technology associated with The Last of Us Part II. The package also includes Left Behind, the prequel chapter focused on Ellie’s friendship with Riley before the main story. Rather than continuing the series, Part I retells Joel and Ellie’s first journey across a collapsed United States after a fungal pandemic. The plot begins in 2003, when Joel’s daughter Sarah dies during the chaotic outbreak, an event that shapes his guarded life twenty years later. In the Boston quarantine zone, Joel works as a smuggler with Tess, and their routine changes when Marlene, leader of the Fireflies, asks them to transport fourteen-year-old Ellie beyond the city. Ellie’s immunity to the Cordyceps infection makes her valuable to the Fireflies, who hope to study it. Their route passes through ruined Boston, Bill’s isolated town, Pittsburgh, a winter settlement near Jackson, and Salt Lake City, where the Fireflies maintain a hospital for their research.
The remake’s central drama comes from the relationship formed during that trek. Joel initially treats Ellie as cargo, while Ellie’s humor, curiosity, and fear gradually challenge his emotional distance. Gameplay supports this bond through stealth, scavenging, crafting, weapons, and encounters with infected and human factions. Clickers, whose fungal growth leaves them blind but sensitive to sound, make noise management essential. The game also gives Ellie a bow, knife, and firearms, allowing her to act beside Joel rather than remain an escort. Expanded accessibility options include visual, audio, and control adjustments designed to make the story playable for more people.
Its decision occurs at the Firefly hospital. The doctors intend to remove Ellie’s brain, believing her immunity could help create a vaccine, a procedure that would kill her. Joel refuses to let them operate, rescues Ellie, and kills Marlene before telling Ellie that the Fireflies abandoned their search. The ending leaves their future morally unresolved because Joel’s protection is also a lie. Part I is notable not merely as a remake, but as a re-presentation of a story whose final choice remains deliberately unsettling. Its PS5 release adds haptics, adaptive triggers, 3D audio, modernized controls, and expanded accessibility while preserving the same ending.
