Super Mario All-Stars

Super Mario All-Stars is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System compilation released by Nintendo in 1993. It remade four earlier Mario platform games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3. Rather than simply placing the original programs on a cartridge, Nintendo rebuilt each game with Super NES graphics, new sound, revised title screens, and a shared save system. The compilation gave players a way to select a game from one central menu and preserve progress in titles that originally used passwords or had no battery backed saving. The first Super Mario Bros. retains its eight worlds, Princess Toadstool rescue premise, warp zones, and familiar flagpole endings. The Lost Levels is the western name used for Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2, a 1986 sequel built around the first game's rules but known for more punishing courses, poison mushrooms, wind, and tricky jumps. The American Super Mario Bros. 2 is the game released in Japan as Super Mario USA; its selectable Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess characters lift and throw vegetables and enemies. Super Mario Bros. 3 brings its world map, inventory, Koopalings, airships, and power ups such as the Super Leaf and Frog Suit. All Stars changes presentation while preserving level layouts and basic mechanics from its sources. Its versions use colorful background art, larger sprites, scrolling effects, and arranged music designed for the Super NES sound hardware. The compilation adds save files, a major convenience for games first issued on cartridges or disks with different progress systems. It also contains gameplay adjustments and altered graphics. In Super Mario Bros. 3, the player receives additional opportunities to save progress, unlike the original NES game. Nintendo changed some visual details, including particular enemy appearances and signs, from the older editions. Super Mario All Stars was followed by a revised Super Nintendo release, Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World, which added Super Mario World to the cartridge. That later package should not be confused with the original four game edition. The original All Stars is notable in Mario history because it made the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 available outside Japan under The Lost Levels title. It was later reissued on the Wii Virtual Console in 2010 and included in the Super Mario All Stars 25th Anniversary Edition, released for Wii in the same year. Nintendo issued it to mark a quarter century of Mario.
