Edit reference

Final Fantasy XIV Online launched in 2010 as Square Enix's second MMORPG, but its original version was widely criticized for technical and design problems. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida assumed leadership in late 2010 and rebuilt the project rather than simply patching it. The troubled 1.0 era became part of the fiction: the Seventh Umbral Calamity ended with the elder dragon Bahamut escaping Dalamud, a satellite revealed to be an Allagan prison. This catastrophe cleared the way for A Realm Reborn, which released in 2013. Its opening places players in Eorzea, a region confronting the Garlean Empire, primal summoning, and political tensions. The player character becomes an adventurer and eventually joins the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization led by Minfilia and associated with the Echo, a power that enables communication across languages and visions of the past. A Realm Reborn's central conflict includes the Ascian Lahabrea and the primal Ultima Weapon, deployed by Gaius van Baelsar. The story continued through expansions: Heavensward took the Warrior of Light into Ishgard's Dragonsong War; Stormblood focused on liberation struggles in Ala Mhigo and Doma; Shadowbringers sent the hero to the First; Endwalker concluded the Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc; and Dawntrail opened Tural in 2024. Combat is organized around the trinity of tank, healer, and damage roles, yet every character may learn multiple jobs by equipping different weapons or tools. The armoury system lets one avatar change from a gladiator to a white mage or a botanist without creating another character. Job quests and later role quests provide class-specific stories. Major group duties include eight-player trials and raids, plus 24-player alliance raids. The Binding Coil of Bahamut was the first high-end raid series after the relaunch, while the Crystal Tower alliance raids were later made compulsory for the main scenario progression for new players. The game's music is chiefly associated with composer Masayoshi Soken, whose work includes the battle theme "To the Edge" and Endwalker's title song, "Endwalker." In 2020, Square Enix expanded the free trial to include A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, allowing play through level 60 with restrictions on social and economic features. The game supports Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S versions. Its recurring Letter from the Producer LIVE broadcasts let Yoshida and the development team preview patches, explain systems, and answer selected player questions. They have become a major channel for official announcements about the game's future.
