Edit reference

Fate/EXTRA Record is a full remake of Fate/EXTRA, the PSP role-playing game originally released in Japan on July 22, 2010. TYPE-MOON announced Record during the tenth-anniversary broadcast for Fate/EXTRA in July 2020. The project is being developed by TYPE-MOON studio BB, the studio established by TYPE-MOON in 2020, and it is not simply a port of the PSP title. Its announced purpose is to rebuild Fate/EXTRA with modern presentation and redesigned gameplay.

The original Fate/EXTRA takes place in SE.RA.PH, a virtual environment within the Moon Cell Automaton, a supercomputer on the Moon. Its participants are Masters who have digitized their souls in order to compete in a Holy Grail War. The player controls Hakuno Kishinami, an amnesiac student who awakens inside the school-like setting of SE.RA.PH and survives the opening elimination process. Hakuno forms a contract with a Servant and proceeds through the tournament’s successive rounds.

Fate/EXTRA differs from many Fate works because its battles are structured around one-on-one matches rather than a citywide conflict among seven Masters. Before combat, the player investigates opponents and gathers information used to identify attack patterns. The PSP game’s combat employed a turn-based rock-paper-scissors structure, with attacks, guards, and breaks chosen in advance. Record’s trailers have shown a substantially reworked battle system, while preserving the Master-and-Servant confrontation at the center of the game.

The three playable Servants in Fate/EXTRA are Saber, Archer, and Caster. Saber is Nero Claudius, portrayed as an assertive Roman emperor; Archer is an original “Nameless” Heroic Spirit whose identity and history are integral to his route; and Caster is Tamamo-no-Mae, a fox spirit from Japanese legend. Each route changes dialogue, characterization, and the player’s relationship with the selected Servant.

Character artist Wada Arco created the distinctive character designs for Fate/EXTRA and returned for Fate/EXTRA Record. The remake’s visuals use updated three-dimensional models while retaining the visual identity associated with her art. A trailer released in 2024 presented the game with renewed environments, animated command sequences, and revised combat footage.

Fate/EXTRA also became the basis for related works, including Fate/EXTRA CCC, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, and Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. Record specifically revisits the first game’s Moon Cell Holy Grail War rather than functioning as a sequel to those titles. At its announcement, TYPE-MOON described it as a remake in development; no final release date was confirmed.
