Bloodborne is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and released for PlayStation 4 in March 2015. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, it places the player in Yharnam, a city known for blood-based healing. The player’s character, called the Hunter, arrives seeking treatment but wakes on the night of a Hunt, when Yharnam’s streets are filled with citizens transformed into beasts. What begins as a search for answers to the city’s sickness leads into the history of the Healing Church and its use of blood.
Bloodborne’s combat is built around aggression rather than sustained defense. After taking damage, the Hunter can recover some recently lost health by striking an enemy quickly. Many weapons have two forms: the Saw Cleaver, for example, switches between a compact blade and an extended, serrated form. Firearms can interrupt certain attacks and leave enemies open to powerful visceral attacks. Defeated enemies yield Blood Echoes, which the Hunter spends on levels and supplies, but unspent Echoes can be lost after death.
The Hunter’s Dream serves as a refuge between journeys through Yharnam and the surrounding areas. There, the Doll helps the Hunter grow stronger, while Gehrman, an elderly hunter, offers guidance. Lamps connect the Dream to places the player has discovered. Beyond the main route, Chalice Dungeons let players explore labyrinths beneath the city, facing additional enemies and bosses.
As the Hunt continues, the story shifts from beasts toward cosmic horror. The scholars of Byrgenwerth investigated ancient beings known as Great Ones, and their discoveries shaped the Healing Church. After the Hunter defeats Rom, the Vacuous Spider, a red moon becomes visible over Yharnam. The journey eventually reaches the Nightmare of Mensis, where the Hunter confronts Mergo’s Wet Nurse. The ending depends on choices made when the Hunter returns to the Dream.
The Old Hunters, an expansion released in November 2015, takes place in the Hunter’s Nightmare and explores the fate of earlier hunters. Its locations include a research hall and a fishing hamlet; its bosses include Ludwig, Lady Maria, and the Orphan of Kos. These encounters add context to the sins behind the Hunt without turning the game’s mysteries into a single, straightforward explanation. Bloodborne tells much of its story through places, item descriptions, and brief conversations, leaving players to piece together how Yharnam’s celebrated healing practice became inseparable from its catastrophe.
