StarCraft is getting a new game in 2030, but with a major shift in format: Blizzard’s sci-fi series will leave RTS behind for this new project and make its debut as an open-world shooter. The distant release window was set deliberately by the project’s leaders. During BlizzCon 2026, Dan Hay, GM and VP of StarCraft, and AnaLee Haertling, associate director, explained that announcing 2030 now is a way to keep the team focused on a clear target. Hay stressed that the date is firm.“The reason I love a good date is that, in reality, it gives you a target.”- Dan HayAccording to Hay, that target works as an internal rallying call for the team. The goal is to deliver something “fun,” “powerful” and built for exploration, without losing the weight fans associate with the StarCraft universe. Asked whether 2030 was a solid date, he confirmed that it was.Key details about development are still being kept under wraps. Hay did not reveal how long the team has been working on the game, but joked that the idea has been in his head for “probably about 25 years.” He said the focus was on bringing together people who know and love the franchise, in order to create a world that feels familiar to veterans and accessible to players who have never played StarCraft. The major shift is in perspective. Instead of commanding armies from above, the new StarCraft aims to put players on the ground, amid the dirt, the tension of war, the warring factions and the massive creatures of the series’ universe.Hay pointed to the feeling of facing a roughly 10-foot-tall Hydralisk while the player is armed and protected by armor. For him, that direct contact changes the way StarCraft can tell its story. Blizzard has not yet detailed platforms, the final title or a specific date within 2030.
