Microsoft will limit monthly use of Xbox Cloud Gaming starting in November. The allowances will depend on the Game Pass plan, ending the unlimited streaming access currently offered to subscribers.

Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud gaming per month. Premium will offer 10 hours, while Essential will be limited to 5 hours per month. According to the company, the change will affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers who use streaming each month.

Players who use up their plan's allowance will be able to purchase additional hours from the Xbox Store. Microsoft will also allow people without an ongoing Game Pass subscription to buy individual hours for cloud gaming.

“This will provide another option for people who want occasional access to cloud gaming or do not want a recurring Game Pass subscription”

- Microsoft

The company attributes the decision to rising costs associated with making games available in the cloud, driven by the growing number of users. Xbox says the monthly limits will make it possible to maintain the service while continuing to invest in reliability and performance. The company itself acknowledges that the new model will mean higher costs for some players.

The change comes as Microsoft's gaming division undergoes a financial restructuring. Matthew Ball, Xbox's strategy director, revealed that Game Pass lost “millions of subscribers” following the steep price increase introduced in October 2025. In Brazil, the Ultimate subscription price rose from R$ 59,99 to R$ 119,90 before being reduced to R$ 76,90, alongside changes to the terms governing the inclusion of major releases in the catalog.

Microsoft has not yet announced how much the extra-hour packages will cost. Pricing, eligible games and the system used to check consumed time will be detailed in November, when the new allowances take effect.
