Swedish developer Liquid Swords, the studio behind Samson, was declared bankrupt by the Stockholm District Court on October 12. The studio released its first game earlier this year, but it was poorly received, largely because of technical problems.Nearly 30 employees have been affected by the bankruptcy. The Swedish state will cover their unpaid wages, while workers said they had gone at least two months without pay. The employees themselves filed the bankruptcy petition. The bankruptcy administrator still hopes to find a buyer for the company.Samson is an open-world beat ’em up with driving elements, inspired by the structure of games such as GTA. Its story follows a character struggling with debt, driving tough, damaged cars and trying to save his sister. The game launched with bugs that could prevent key characters from appearing or cause missions to fail through no fault of the player.Liquid Swords was founded in 2020 under the leadership of Christofer Sundberg, co-founder of Avalanche Studios, known for the Just Cause series. Samson is the studio’s first release and, unless the bankruptcy proceedings produce a solution, could be its only one.Despite its financial difficulties, the team kept working on the game. An update released this month improved combat responsiveness and delivered a range of fixes. Development had also been hit by significant staff cuts, with half the employees laid off before launch. The bankruptcy comes about six months after Samson’s release. The game continued to receive support even as employees faced delayed pay.
