*Slender: The Eight Pages* is a free, first-person survival horror game created by Mark J. Hadley under the name Parsec Productions. Released in 2012, it was originally titled *Slender*; its longer title distinguishes it from other games based on the same internet character. The premise is spare: an unnamed player enters a dark forest and searches for eight paper notes while avoiding Slender Man. The character predates the game. Eric Knudsen, using the name Victor Surge, introduced Slender Man in a 2009 Something Awful forum contest. Hadley’s game turns that figure into a pursuing threat rather than explaining his origins.

Play begins with a flashlight and no weapon. The player walks among trees at night and several landmarks, including a tunnel, a concrete bathroom building, vehicles, and storage tanks. Pages are attached to surfaces at these sites; their positions vary between attempts. Messages such as “DON’T LOOK... OR IT TAKES YOU” appear as handwriting rather than quest instructions. There is no map directing the player between notes. Sprinting helps create distance, but stamina is limited, making a retreat less dependable after prolonged running. Looking toward Slender Man interferes with the view through visual distortion, so spotting him is itself dangerous.

The game escalates as pages are collected. Its soundtrack introduces more insistent percussion, while sudden bursts of electronic noise accompany dangerous encounters. Slender Man, a tall, faceless figure in a dark suit, can appear unexpectedly in the forest and around landmarks. The player cannot defeat him or pause to investigate safely; avoiding his gaze and continuing the search are the only practical responses. Even the forest’s open paths offer little reassurance, because looking away to escape also risks losing track of landmarks. Rather than provide lengthy exposition, the game builds a repeated cycle of navigation, discovery, pursuit, and abrupt failure.

*The Eight Pages* became visible through online playthroughs, where viewers could watch players react to its sudden appearances and mounting sound cues. Its compact objective and short sessions made attempts easy to record and share. It also helped establish a template for Slender Man games: searching a dark location for scattered objects while an unkillable pursuer closes in. In 2013, Blue Isle Studios released *Slender: The Arrival*, developed with Parsec Productions, expanding the concept into a commercial game with multiple levels and a more explicit narrative. The original remains a distinct, self-contained forest hunt, not a chapter of that sequel.
