Resident Evil 2 is a survival-horror game developed and published by Capcom. It first released for the PlayStation in Japan in January 1998, followed by international releases that year. Directed by Hideki Kamiya and produced by Shinji Mikami, it was created after Capcom discarded an earlier version, commonly called “Resident Evil 1.5,” because the team believed it was not sufficiently polished or connected to the original game. Set two months after the Mansion Incident of Resident Evil, the story takes place in Raccoon City during a catastrophic outbreak of the T-virus. Players choose between two protagonists: rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy, arriving for his first day at the Raccoon Police Department, and college student Claire Redfield, who comes to the city searching for her brother, Chris Redfield. Their separate scenarios intersect with those of Ada Wong, a mysterious woman pursuing information connected to Umbrella, and Sherry Birkin, the young daughter of Umbrella researchers William and Annette Birkin. The game’s most famous location is the Raccoon Police Department, a former art museum converted into a police station. Its locked doors, key-based puzzles, statues, and interconnected rooms established much of the game’s structure. Later sections lead to the city sewers and Umbrella’s underground research facility. William Birkin becomes a central antagonist after injecting himself with the experimental G-virus, transforming repeatedly into increasingly monstrous forms. The T-virus outbreak is also embodied by zombies, Lickers, giant spiders, and the relentless Tyrant, known as Mr. X in later releases. Resident Evil 2 expanded the series’ “zapping system.” Leon and Claire each have an A scenario and a B scenario, with the second character’s route changing enemy placements, events, certain bosses, and story details. This design encouraged repeat playthroughs and made the two protagonists’ experiences feel connected rather than identical. Capcom released ports for Windows, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, and GameCube. The Nintendo 64 version was notable for compressing the game’s full-motion video and voice content onto a cartridge. A PlayStation version later appeared through the PlayStation Network, while the original has also been included in various retrospective collections and services. A complete remake, also titled Resident Evil 2, launched in January 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. Built using Capcom’s RE Engine, it replaced the original’s fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds with an over-the-shoulder perspective and fully three-dimensional environments. The remake retained Leon, Claire, Ada, Sherry, William Birkin, and Mr. X, while revising encounters, dialogue, exploration, and several story elements. It received major critical acclaim and became one of Capcom’s best-selling games.
