Reigns is a 2016 strategy game developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital. It places the player on the throne of a fictional medieval kingdom, presenting the monarch’s decisions as a sequence of cards. Each card represents a person, faction, event, or problem, and the player answers by swiping left or right. Although the gesture resembles a dating app, every choice changes the balance among four powers: the Church, the People, the Army, and the Treasury.

The game’s central challenge is survival. A ruler usually dies when one of the four powers becomes completely dominant or completely neglected. Starving the treasury can produce financial collapse, while alienating the Church may provoke religious consequences. Ignoring the army can leave the kingdom vulnerable, and allowing the people’s approval to fall can cause rebellion. The player therefore makes short-term compromises rather than following a single, stable governing philosophy.

Death does not simply end a run. Reigns is structured as a roguelike, so the next monarch inherits a changing political situation, while the game tracks the dynasty’s history. Some deaths are ordinary consequences of poor decisions; others arise from unusual chains of encounters. The ruler can be poisoned, executed, killed in battle, or affected by supernatural events. The objective is not merely to rule benevolently, but to discover how different decisions unlock new characters, mysteries, and endings.

The game’s narrative includes recurring figures such as the royal advisor, the executioner, the witch, the merchant, and the mysterious Devil. The monarch also encounters a dungeon and can pursue a sword connected to a larger supernatural storyline. These events give the apparently simple card system a hidden structure: repeated play reveals that the kingdom’s problems are connected, and that some objectives require deliberately steering several reigns toward specific outcomes.

Nerial designed Reigns around compact decisions, so a play session can last only a few minutes, yet the large collection of cards and branching consequences encourages repeated attempts. Its minimalist presentation uses illustrated character portraits, terse dialogue, and a darkly comic tone instead of a conventional tactical interface. The original game launched for mobile devices and computers in August 2016 and became known for translating political management into an immediately readable left-or-right choice.

Its success produced follow-ups, including Reigns: Her Majesty in 2017, which shifts the role to a queen and adds new systems, and Reigns: Game of Thrones in 2018. The original remains distinct for its invented medieval setting, its four-way balancing mechanic, and its emphasis on learning through failure across an entire royal lineage.
