PUBG: Battlegrounds

PUBG: Battlegrounds began as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a battle royale game associated with Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene. It entered Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017, and received its full Windows release on December 20 that year. Developed by PUBG Corporation, a company within the corporate group now known as Krafton, it later arrived on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The Xbox version entered Game Preview in December 2017, while the PlayStation 4 version launched in December 2018. On January 12, 2022, the game changed to a free-to-play model.

A standard match starts with up to 100 players aboard a transport plane. Each chooses when to parachute onto the map, then searches buildings and other locations for guns, ammunition, armor, medical supplies, and vehicles. Solo competitors fight alone; duo and squad modes allow teammates to revive players who have been knocked down. The safe area shrinks in stages, and the damaging Blue Zone pressures survivors toward increasingly confined encounters. A final survivor or team earns the signature “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” message. Matches depend heavily on where the plane flies, which equipment players find, and how they handle the closing circle.

Erangel, the original map, is an island setting with landmarks including the Sosnovka Military Base, Pochinki, and the School. Miramar, introduced with the December 2017 release, replaced Erangel’s greenery with desert roads and settlements such as Los Leones and Pecado. Sanhok, added in 2018, offered a smaller jungle environment and the contested Bootcamp landing spot. Vikendi brought snowy terrain later that year. Subsequent additions included Deston, an eight-by-eight-kilometer map featuring the city of Ripton, and Rondo, another large map released in 2023. This changing map roster has given the original parachute-and-scavenge formula several distinct geographical settings.

The game’s weapons include recognizable firearms such as the M416 assault rifle, Kar98k bolt-action rifle, and AWM sniper rifle, alongside its famously usable frying pan. Supply drops can attract competitors seeking powerful equipment, creating fights away from the shrinking circle’s center. PUBG also developed a competitive scene: the inaugural PUBG Global Championship took place in 2019, with Gen.G winning the title. Steam recorded more than three million simultaneous PUBG players at its peak in January 2018. Its 2022 free-to-play transition retained a paid Battlegrounds Plus upgrade, which provides access to ranked play and other benefits. Unlike a scripted campaign, its defining sequence is created anew each match, from the initial aircraft flight to the final elimination.
