Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s return to its samurai action series, announced at The Game Awards in December 2024 for release in 2026. The game is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, using Capcom’s RE Engine. Rather than presenting a modern reinterpretation of the franchise’s existing protagonists, it centers on Miyamoto Musashi, the historical swordsman associated with The Book of Five Rings. The announcement trailer places Musashi in Kyoto during the early Edo period, where the city is threatened by the return of the Genma. These supernatural enemies are the demon force established in earlier Onimusha games, and the trailer shows them attacking streets, temples, and other locations around the historic capital. The setting connects the game to a recognizable period of Japanese history while retaining the series’ supernatural premise. Capcom has described Musashi as a young warrior who receives the Oni Gauntlet, the signature artifact that allows an Onimusha to absorb the souls of defeated demons. The trailer depicts him using the gauntlet after combat, drawing in energy from Genma bodies. This mechanic is one of the clearest links between Way of the Sword and earlier entries such as Onimusha: Warlords, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, and Onimusha 3: Demon Siege. The combat footage emphasizes close-range sword fighting rather than firearms or large-scale battlefield action. Musashi cuts through individual Genma, counters attacks, and performs fast finishing strikes. A notable visual feature is his changing appearance: Capcom has based the character’s likeness on the late Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who played Miyamoto Musashi in Hiroshi Inagaki’s film trilogy. The game therefore connects its fictional hero to both the historical swordsman and a major representation of him in Japanese cinema. Way of the Sword is not presented as a remake of the first Onimusha. It is a new installment that uses familiar elements—Genma, the Oni Gauntlet, soul absorption, and a historical Japanese setting—while moving the series onto current-generation hardware. Capcom’s announcement marks the first entirely new mainline Onimusha game since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, released in 2006. The project’s confirmed 2026 window means its final story details, supporting cast, regional scope, and complete gameplay systems remain undisclosed. At present, the verified premise is specific: Musashi must fight the Genma in early-Edo Kyoto with the power of the Oni Gauntlet, continuing Capcom’s demon-slaying samurai saga.
