MultiVersus

MultiVersus was a free-to-play platform fighting game developed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Games in 2024. Its open beta began in July 2022, following technical tests and a limited early-access period for selected players across platforms. The game officially launched on May 28, 2024, replacing its beta version with seasonal content and a revised progression system. Its central premise combines characters from Warner Bros. properties, including DC, Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Game of Thrones, and Adventure Time. Players can fight as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, Arya Stark, Finn, Jake, or other licensed figures onscreen. The roster also includes original fighters such as Reindog, a guardian created specifically for the game's multiverse storyline and setting. Rather than presenting one plot, MultiVersus frames its battles through a narrative about the Nothing, a destructive force threatening reality. The game's combat draws on directional attacks, recoveries, ring-outs, and team play, with two-versus-two matches as a defining format online. Its characters use roles and moves: Superman can seize opponents, Velma supports allies, and Iron Giant fights as a heavyweight. The game included a cinematic opening, training tools, local multiplayer, online matchmaking, and modes built around missions and arcade challenges. Progression awarded character experience, perks, cosmetics, and currencies, while seasonal battle passes provided additional unlocks and themed rewards for players. The developers added fighters after launch, including Jason Voorhees, Agent Smith, Banana Guard, and Samurai Jack, expanding the crossover roster. A second-season addition was the Powerpuff Girls, represented as a playable fighter whose attacks switch among Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. The game highlighted unusual pairings, such as Steven Universe and LeBron James sharing a team in battle during online matches. Player First Games later announced that MultiVersus would receive its final season, ending new content rather than continuing indefinitely afterward. Warner Bros. Games then announced that online services would end on May 30, 2025, after one year of full release. The announcement made the fifth season's rewards and offline access especially important for players who wanted to preserve the experience. MultiVersus therefore became a notable example of a licensed live-service fighter whose availability depended heavily on servers and seasonal operations. Its short commercial lifespan nonetheless demonstrated how Warner's extensive entertainment library could support recognizable, mechanically different fighters in one game. For fans, its legacy rests on that specific collision of franchises, ambitious team combat, and an unusually visible crossover design.
