Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat 11 is a 2019 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It launched on April 23, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows, with a Stadia version released later. The game continues the series’ emphasis on one-on-one combat, elaborate finishing moves, and a story that connects its fighters through rivalries, alliances, and supernatural conflict.

Its central plot begins after the defeat of the fallen Elder God Shinnok. Raiden, the thunder god and protector of Earthrealm, has become more ruthless in response to the threat posed by Outworld and its allies. His actions anger Kronika, the Keeper of Time, who seeks to reshape history and erase Raiden from it. When Kronika disrupts the timeline, fighters from different periods are brought together. Younger versions of characters meet their older selves, creating conflicts that drive the campaign, including the uneasy encounter between Johnny Cage and his future self.

The campaign features a roster drawn from across the franchise. Returning fighters include Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and Kitana. Newcomers such as Geras and Cetrion are tied directly to Kronika’s plan: Geras serves as her powerful lieutenant, while Cetrion is her daughter and an Elder God. The story’s timeline premise also brings back familiar antagonists, including Shao Kahn, and leads to a final confrontation over who will control the course of history.

Mortal Kombat 11 introduced customizable character variations, allowing players to alter fighters’ abilities, equipment, and appearance. Its customization system gives each character unlockable gear, such as masks, weapons, and costume pieces. Competitive play also uses variations that define particular move sets, although the game’s balance and available options changed through updates. The combat includes Fatal Blows, powerful attacks available when a fighter’s health is low, as well as returning series features such as Fatalities and Brutalities.

The game’s single-player content extends beyond its story campaign. Towers of Time present changing challenges and modifiers, while the Krypt offers an exploratory way to unlock rewards. Online modes include ranked competition, and the game supports local matches. NetherRealm expanded the release with downloadable characters and story content. The Aftermath expansion, released in May 2020, added a story chapter in which Shang Tsung attempts to secure the Crown of Souls and alter the outcome of the main campaign. Its guest fighters included RoboCop, alongside returning series characters Fujin and Sheeva.

Mortal Kombat 11 received generally positive reviews, with critics commonly praising its presentation, fighting mechanics, and cinematic story. It became a commercial success, surpassing 12 million copies sold worldwide by 2022. An expanded edition, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate, collected the base game, Aftermath, and additional character content.
