Fortnite was announced by Epic Games in 2011, originally as a cooperative survival game in which players scavenged materials and built fortifications against husks. That concept became Save the World, released in paid early access on July 25, 2017. Its larger cultural impact came with Fortnite Battle Royale, a free-to-play 100-player mode launched on September 26, 2017, shortly after PUBG had established the battle royale genre's commercial potential. Battle Royale uses an island map, a shrinking storm circle, and a Battle Bus that carries players to their starting drops. Players search for weapons and consumables while harvesting wood, stone, and metal to build walls, ramps, floors, and roofs. Building differentiated Fortnite from competitors, although Epic later introduced Zero Build, a permanent no-building variant, in 2022. The game's seasons turned its map into a continuing event space. In 2019, the "The End" black-hole event concluded Chapter 1; Fortnite's official livestream then went dark before Chapter 2's island appeared. Fortnite has also staged in-game concerts, including Marshmello's February 2, 2019, performance at Pleasant Park. Its Astronomical collaboration with Travis Scott occurred in April 2020, and Epic said it drew 12.3 million concurrent players. Licensed crossover outfits and events have brought characters and performers into the game, including Marvel, Star Wars, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and artists such as Ariana Grande. Epic expanded Fortnite beyond Battle Royale with Creative, a sandbox for player-made islands, and later consolidated several experiences under the Fortnite umbrella. In December 2023, Epic launched Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival alongside Battle Royale, presenting the client as a platform containing distinct games. Fortnite Festival was developed with Harmonix, the studio behind Rock Band, while Rocket Racing came from Psyonix, developer of Rocket League. Fortnite was initially built in Unreal Engine 4, and Epic has used the game to demonstrate Unreal Engine 5 features, including the 2023 introduction of Unreal Editor for Fortnite. The editor lets creators publish islands, including works using Verse, a programming language Epic designed for the Fortnite ecosystem. Battle Royale remains supported through themed chapters and seasons, changing locations, loot pools, mechanics, and its central map rather than simply adding isolated cosmetic items. That repeated reconstruction, paired with live events and officially licensed collaborations, explains why Fortnite has evolved far beyond its original cooperative defense premise for a global audience, while retaining its recognizable harvesting, building, and storm-driven survival loop for players across its modes today.
