Factorio: Space Age is an expansion for Wube Software’s automation game Factorio, released on October 21, 2024, alongside the 2.0 update. It retains the crash-landed engineer’s central objective: build a rocket, but extends that goal beyond Nauvis into a space-based progression campaign. The expansion requires the original game and is included in the Space Age bundle with Factorio. Version 2.0 introduced major engine and interface changes for all players, while Space Age adds planets, elevated railways, quality, and new production chains.

After establishing a factory on Nauvis, the player launches a rocket carrying a space platform, a mobile construction and logistics system assembled from platform tiles. Platforms gather asteroid chunks while travelling through space; those chunks can be processed into resources, including metallic asteroid, carbonic asteroid, and oxide asteroid products. The player eventually visits four new worlds: Vulcanus, Fulgora, Gleba, and Aquilo, each with distinct resources, hazards, and manufacturing rules.

Vulcanus is a volcanic planet where foundries, molten iron, and molten copper support heavy industry, while its hostile environment changes how water and power are obtained. Fulgora is an electrical world dominated by lightning, scrap recycling, electromagnetic science, and isolated islands connected by elevated rail. Gleba focuses on agriculture and biological processing: crops grow, spoilage matters, and biochambers turn biological materials into useful products. Aquilo is a late-game ice planet with extreme cold, forcing the engineer to maintain heat and transport fluids across a world with limited buildable land.

Each planet unlocks technologies that can be used elsewhere, so the campaign is not a sequence of isolated bases; it is a network whose factories feed one another. Space Age also adds quality, a mechanic that gives equipment and products quality tiers, allowing better versions of machines, modules, weapons, and vehicles. Quality is produced through quality modules and introduces additional planning, because higher-quality items can require separate inventories and careful recycling.

The elevated rail system expands trains vertically, letting tracks cross existing terrain and factories without the same ground-level constraints as ordinary rail. New enemies and defenses accompany the planets, including the demolisher on Vulcanus, the stompers on Gleba, and lightning-related threats on Fulgora. The expansion’s endgame culminates in advanced space-platform travel and research, while its production challenges make the original rocket launch a starting point rather than a conclusion. Consequently, Space Age changes Factorio from a single-planet construction problem into a deliberately interplanetary logistics problem throughout.
