Card Shark is a narrative adventure game developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital. Released on June 2, 2022, for Nintendo Switch and Windows, it places the player in eighteenth-century France, where success depends on deception rather than conventional combat or puzzle solving.
The player controls a mute young man who works in a countryside tavern. His life changes when a mysterious nobleman, the Comte de Saint-Germain, arrives to play cards. The protagonist becomes involved in a dangerous career of cheating, first assisting the count and eventually learning to perform increasingly elaborate scams independently. Because the main character cannot speak, communication relies heavily on gestures, facial expressions, and the count’s instructions.
Card Shark turns historical card hustling into its central gameplay system. Each trick is a short sequence of timed inputs and observations. The player may learn to signal an opponent’s hand, glimpse hidden cards, stack a deck, perform a false shuffle, deal from the bottom, or manipulate a cut. These techniques are introduced as practical routines rather than abstract abilities, and mistakes can expose the player to suspicion. A failed attempt may lead to confrontation, financial loss, or the need to restart a sequence.
The journey moves through rural France and toward Paris, with the player meeting gamblers, aristocrats, criminals, and other figures connected to the count’s larger objective. Behind the tavern scams lies a conspiracy involving secret societies, political power, and the identity of the elusive Comte de Saint-Germain. The game’s episodic structure combines card demonstrations with exploration, conversation, and investigations into the count’s past.
Its presentation is distinctive. Artist Nicolai Troshinsky created the hand-drawn visual style, using bold shapes and animated illustrations that evoke satirical eighteenth-century prints while remaining highly expressive. The soundtrack, composed by Andrea Babich, supports the period setting with music that changes as the player moves between tense cheating sessions, travel scenes, and more ominous discoveries.
Card Shark’s historical flavor also comes from its attention to period social spaces: taverns, estates, roadside gatherings, and formal card rooms all become stages for fraud. Rather than treating cards as a generic fantasy mechanic, it makes the rules, gestures, and physical handling of a deck part of the story. Its campaign is therefore both a fictional rise through France’s gambling underworld and a playable catalog of traditional cheating methods, framed by the protagonist’s attempt to understand who the count really is and why he has chosen a silent apprentice.
