The Most Anticipated RPGs of 2025

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Developer: Warhorse Studios

Release Date: February 11, 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC

Scheduled for February 4, 2025, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed 2018 RPG, offering fans an immersive return to the 15th century as Henry, the son of a blacksmith, journeys through historical conflicts.

Maintaining its commitment to historical realism, the sequel expands on the original title’s elements and offers a detailed open world where the player’s actions directly influence the reactions of communities and NPCs, and affect character development and story progression.

This time around, Henry does not start out as an inexperienced rookie; instead, he is now a knight and has skills that reflect his growth since the first game. Additionally, combat has been improved with the introduction of crossbows and the first forms of firearms.

Compared to its predecessor, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II promises several innovations that give the player more options to influence NPCs and shape the course of missions. The game also promises a deeper narrative, with a script that is 2.2 million words long, according to developer Daniel Vávra, potentially setting a new record for the largest script ever written for a video game.

Avowed

Developer: Obsidian Entertainment

Release Date: February 18, 2025

Platforms: Xbox Series and PC

Avowed, the upcoming action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, will be available for Xbox Series and PC. Set in the universe of Eora, known from the Pillars of Eternity series, the game transports players to the mysterious Living Lands, an island filled with adventure and danger. Players take on the role of an envoy of the Aedyr Empire, tasked with investigating an enigmatic plague.

The game adopts a first-person perspective, offering a dynamic combat experience that combines magic, firearms, and melee. Players can quickly switch between distinct weapon and magic configurations to tackle each challenge, and the game features multiple skill trees, allowing players to unlock more powerful abilities and upgrades both in and out of combat.

While previous Pillars of Eternity titles are not required to enjoy Avowed, longtime fans will recognize familiar elements from the Eora universe, now presented in a new light.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Developer: Capcom

Release Date: February 28, 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC

In Monster Hunter Wilds, players take on the role of a professional hunter, exploring the enigmatic Forbidden Lands in search of a missing expedition. The mission involves facing various monsters in challenging environments.

This new title maintains the series' signature third-person perspective, but introduces several innovations. One of the main additions is a dynamic weather system and day and night cycles, which influence monsters' behavior and the player's interaction with the world. In addition, the Focus Mode allows targeted attacks on specific parts of monsters, allowing players to exploit wounds and weak points.

Monster Hunter: Wilds also promises a cohesive world with no transitions, eliminating loading screens between areas. The narrative has been improved, with more developed non-playable characters and a base of operations integrated directly into the hunting environment, not to mention the breathtaking graphics that make this Capcom title worthy of being called a “next-gen game”.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Developer: Sandfall Interactive

Release Date: April 24, 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC

As Sandfall Interactive’s debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is scheduled for release on April 24, 2025, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. This turn-based RPG incorporates real-time elements, heavily inspired by great historical names of JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy and Persona.

The game is set in a fantasy world inspired by the French Belle Époque, where the playable characters lead Expedition 33 on a mission to stop the enigmatic “Paintress”, whose curse threatens the existence of humanity.

One of the striking features of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the combination of turn-based combat mechanics with real-time actions. During battles, players can perform dodges and parries in real time or perform critical attacks by pressing buttons at the right time, increasing immersion and interactivity.

In addition, the title features a navigable world map, reminiscent of the classic JRPGs from which it is inspired - and which bring with it thousands of players who see this title as the most anticipated RPG of 2025, and with a renowned voice cast, including Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), the game promises a unique experience.

Borderlands 4

Developer: Gearbox Software

Release Date: 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC

Borderlands 4 does not yet have a release date, but is scheduled for release in 2025, with confirmed availability for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.

Maintaining the essence of first-person looter shooter that consecrated the series, the game introduces four new Vault Hunters and is set on a new planet, moving away from Pandora, the setting of the previous titles.

Gearbox emphasizes that, although the game is not classified as “open world”, it offers a more “open and free” experience than its predecessors, allowing players to explore vast areas without loading screens. New movement mechanics, such as the use of grappling hooks, have been added to enhance exploration and combat.

Elden Ring: Nightreign

Developer: From Software

Release date: 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC

Elden Ring: Nightreign has already led to a huge hype among Soulslikes fans for bearing the name of the most acclaimed title in the genre and being From Software's new work after the expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. Unlike the former, Nightreign is a standalone adventure that does not require the base game to be played. However, there is still no info about the possibility of crossplay between platforms.

In Nightreign, players form teams of up to three players, known as Nightfarers, to explore Limveld, a parallel region in the Elden Ring universe. The mission is to survive three full cycles of day and night, facing challenging enemies and gathering resources during the day, while at night the map shrinks, forcing confrontations with powerful bosses.

The game features eight pre-made characters, each with unique skills and combat styles, encouraging strategic cooperation between team members. While solo play is possible, the experience is optimized for co-op, providing a more dynamic approach focused on shorter play sessions, lasting approximately 40 minutes each, incorporating roguelike elements.

Fable

Developer: Playground Games

Release Date: 2025

Platforms: Xbox Series, PC

Fable 4, or just Fable, is being developed by Playground Games and is scheduled for release in 2025, with versions for Xbox Series and PC. It is a reboot of the classic Fable action RPG series, being the first major release since Fable: The Journey in 2012.

Set in the fictional world of Albion, Fable promises a third-person action RPG experience, allowing players to use various melee weapons, bows for ranged attacks, and magic spells. The game seeks to maintain the series' signature humor, while updating the franchise with contemporary gameplay mechanics and visuals, aiming to attract a new generation of players.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Developer: GameFreak

Release Date: 2025

Platforms: Nintendo Switch

Pokémon Legends: Z-A promises to offer a new perspective on the sixth generation of the Pokémon franchise. Set in the Lumiose City, in the Kalos region, the story unfolds during a redevelopment plan that aims to transform the city into a harmonious space for humans and Pokémon.

Unlike previous games, Pokémon Legends: Z-A focuses entirely on Lumiose City, without allowing exploration of the wider Kalos region. This approach offers a more focused experience, highlighting urban development and the coexistence between humans and Pokémon.

The Outer Worlds 2

Developer: Obsidian Studios

Release Date: 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC

The sequel to the acclaimed RPG nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards and Golden Joystick Awards in 2019 and winner of the Best Original Game at the Game Critics Awards, The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled for release in 2025, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Originally announced in 2021, the game had a new trailer revealed during The Game Awards 2024.

In this sequel, players will be transported to a new star system, introducing new companions, weapons and environments to explore. Obsidian Studios promises that The Outer Worlds 2 will be twice as big as its predecessor, while maintaining the characteristic humor and engaging narrative that made the original title stand out as one of the best games of its generation.

Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

Developer: Paradox Interactive

Release Date: 2025

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC

After a series of delays and changes in the development team, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, developed by British studio The Chinese Room and published by Paradox Interactive, is scheduled for release in the first half of 2025, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.

Set in contemporary Seattle, the player assumes the role of Phyre, an elder vampire navigating the intrigues of vampire society. The game maintains the first-person perspective and offers a deep narrative, where the player's choices directly influence the story. Bloodlines 2 features a customizable protagonist, allowing players to choose their preferred clan, each with distinct skills and characteristics.

In addition to improved graphics and more fluid gameplay, Bloodlines 2 places a greater emphasis on action elements compared to its predecessor, incorporating improved combat mechanics that vary depending on the chosen clan and the player's decisions.

Despite this increased focus on action, the game promises to maintain a dense story and deep role-playing elements, characteristics that made the original title a cult classic.

And there's much more to come in the next years!

If 2024 was a year of big releases and 2025 promises to keep up with the hype, the following years will have titles and sequels highly anticipated by RPG fans.

Some of the main examples include The Witcher 4 from CD Projekt Red and, for fans of action-adventure with RPG elements, the new game from Naughty Dog, Intergalatic: The Heretic Prophet.

Other titles, whose release year has not yet been confirmed, include Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate and the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls VI, first announced in 2018.
