Blizzard has revealed details about D.Mon, Overwatch’s new tank hero, who will launch with Season 4 next week. As the leader of the MEKA Squad, the South Korean mecha pilot group that also includes D.Va, she fights with a sword and shield and is designed to hold the front line.

D.Mon also represents a change in how the team built a mecha hero. Unlike D.Va, whom the game treats as two separate heroes when she leaves her mech, D.Mon is considered a single entity, even when she separates from the mech.

Game director Aaron Keller compared D.Va’s programming to a “plate of spaghetti” in a 2018 interview. The structure caused problems and bugs whenever the character left her mech. Kenny Hudson, lead hero producer, explained that the team decided to avoid the same approach with D.Mon.

The decision required extra work, including twice as many animations, but it should make it easier to develop the character, fix issues and create new features for her in the future.

On the battlefield, D.Mon is tougher and more stable than D.Va. She remains anchored to the ground but can move forward in any direction using a limited amount of fuel. A shoulder-mounted machine-gun cannon lets her attack from a distance before closing in.

When she raises her shield, D.Mon becomes similar to a slightly faster version of Reinhardt. Her kit includes an additional charge that can knock enemies back, even sending them off platforms. The ultimate ability is called Limit Break and unleashes a powerful spinning sword attack. Each hit exposes a weakness in enemies, causing them to take increased damage.
