Onimusha: Way of the Sword has received its first reviews, and the reception for Capcom’s new game is largely positive. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is also among the highlights, with critics praising its combat and adaptation to the console.

The scores collected so far include four 9/10 ratings, one perfect 10/10, a 4/5, and a 7/10. The review that awarded a 10/10 describes the battles as an intense sequence of moves and counterattacks, where every defense can create an opening for victory.

The slower, more deliberate combat is one of the game’s most praised aspects. The successive parries and attacks capable of cutting enemies in half are central to the experience. The adventure has also been praised for its protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, who is described as a charismatic, confident and immediately engaging hero.

The setting and cinematic presentation have also drawn attention. One review highlighted Musashi’s facial expressions, subtle gestures and characterization as elements that help make his personality feel convincing.

On Nintendo Switch 2, the port was considered comparable in performance to other Capcom games released for the platform. Players can lock the frame rate at 30 fps for greater stability. The resolution and level of detail are below those of the versions on other consoles, but were still considered good for the hardware.

The main criticism concerns the combat system’s variety. The lack of weapon-specific moves and broader combos can make encounters feel repetitive. According to one review, the fundamentals work well during the first 10 to 15 hours, but the game is slow to expand its offensive options.

Despite that caveat, Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the Capcom franchise’s return with a strong reception from critics, including a 9/10 rating.
